About this listen

This program features an author's note read by Nora Roberts, sharing her inspiration for The Lost Bride Trilogy and the incredible personal history behind these stories.

Inheritance is the first in The Lost Bride Trilogy by #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts—a tale of tragedies, loves found and lost, and a family haunted for generations.

1806: Astrid Poole sits in her bridal clothes, overwhelmed with happiness. But before her marriage can be consummated, she is murdered, and the circle of gold torn from her finger. Her last words are a promise to Collin never to leave him…

Graphic designer Sonya MacTavish is stunned to learn that her late father had a twin he never knew about—and that her newly discovered uncle, Collin Poole, has left her almost everything he owned, including a majestic Victorian house on the Maine coast, which the will stipulates she must live in for at least three years. Her engagement recently broken, she sets off to find out why the boys were separated at birth—and why it was all kept secret until a genealogy website brought it to light.

Trey, the young lawyer who greets her at the sprawling clifftop manor, notes Sonya’s unease—and acknowledges that yes, the place is haunted…but just a little. Sure enough, Sonya finds objects moved and music playing out of nowhere. She sees a painting by her father inexplicably hanging in her deceased uncle’s office, and a portrait of a woman named Astrid, whom the lawyer refers to as “the first lost bride.” It’s becoming clear that Sonya has inherited far more than a house. She has inherited a centuries-old curse, and a puzzle to be solved if there is any hope of breaking it…

Critic reviews

"Romance queen Roberts takes all of the beloved elements of classic gothic romances, including a marvelously atmospheric old mansion as well as a spunky heroine starting over in life, then puts her own inventive spin on things... an incisively etched cast of characters and a spooktacular plot that will keep readers up long past their regular bedtimes."—Booklist (starred)

"Roberts is in fine form here. Her lush, ethereal world of ghosts and spirits is the perfect foil for Sonya’s down-to-earth, almost spartan manner... Exciting launch for Roberts’ new trilogy."—Kirkus Reviews (starred)

This book is one of Nora's best!!

I am not a fan of Nora's fantasy writing but she is the best author for stories with ghosts. this book grabbed my attention from the first paragraph. The narrator is amazing and keeps my interest throughout the book. A wonderful story that I will listen to over and over. I cannot wait for the next book in the trilogy. I have always loved Nora's love stories but this one blows my mind.

it's a Cliffhanger

True to form, this first installment will leave you begging for more. But given the depth of the story line. I am sure it will be worth the wait.

Sonjia inherits more than a mansion, but the history and curse that comes with it. Ms. Roberts pulled out all the stops creating a ghost story that spans centuries while weaving in magic, an alternate time portal and more.

The ending was definitely a cliff hanger!

I loved the storyline and all the characters in it. I am excited for the next installment in the series! Do we know when that will be?

One of Nora’s best!

As the first book in this trilogy I’m hooked and I can’t wait for the rest of the story to unfold. I’m not one for books about hauntings or things that go bump in the night. I’m definitely a chicken…but how this is written and how the story unfolds is compelling. The characters are strong and funny but there’s enough seriousness to be drawn into a story in which I almost want to be there. Almost because - chicken!! I could not stop listening to it. Brittany does an excellent job of narrating this book and I hope for more from her. She brings the story to life with all the moments - normal and paranormal - her narration is perfect for this story. I am a long time Nora Roberts fan and this book is for me one of her best.

It's good, not great!

Let me say that the storyline is absolutely top notch. The characters are likeable and engaging. The premise is interesting - I love Nora's supernatural titles. And clearly, this is a trilogy. I really enjoy Nora's trilogies. So far, so good - right?

Sadly, this is the first non-five-star review that I've ever given Nora. And, knowing how Nora feels about reader input, she's not going to care about that. But YOU may care, so I'm going to tell you what kept me from assigning that fifth star.

First, I wasn't a fan of the narrator. There was just something about how she voiced the main character that irked me. She did an outstanding job on all of the supporting characters. I loved Deuce, Trey, Cleo and Winter's voices. But Sonia and the brides' voices were a little on the annoying side. Sonia seemed a little off - a little whiny and it really seemed like she pronounced "library" as "libary." It took me five times replaying the word to discover that she just doesn't pronounce the "r" sound enough. This was a glaring issue to me - call me a little anal retentive when it comes to that word's pronunciation.

The brides' voices were just plain awful. I know that they were meant to be upper crust and privileged sounding, but just. NO. I hated all of them.

And lastly, the issue that everyone else seems to have. The cliffhanger. Nora has done cliffhangers before. And those didn't irk me as much as this one did. There are ways to do a cliffhanger that kind of wrap up the story, while clearly indicating that there is so much more to come. And this wasn't that. This was cutting off the reader in the middle of a breath. It was abrupt and disconcerting and completely jarring. Not her finest ending. Not even close.

But is the title worth the credit and the time to listen? Definitely. Just be aware of the issues.
