About this listen

In Danielle Steel's thrilling novel, a woman's legacy - shaped by tragedy, fortitude, and undying devotion - transforms lives and hearts long after she is gone, and fulfills at last her most precious bequest.

Faded photographs of a glamorous couple in postwar Europe. Old letters hinting of tragic loss. And a breathtaking array of magnificent jewelry, spectacular stones in exquisite settings. These are the contents of a safe-deposit box long abandoned in a New York City bank. If no heir can be identified, the jewelry will be auctioned. But who was the woman who left such a fortune and no will?

Two people, drawn together by chance, begin to unravel the mystery. Jane Willoughby is a law clerk at the surrogate's court and Phillip Lawton a fine arts expert for Christie's auction house. They are simply doing their jobs when they come to the bank to inspect the contents of the box. But for both Jane and Phillip the search turns personal - and their efforts to reconstruct an enigmatic life will lead from New York to London and Paris, to Rome and Naples, and a series of stunning revelations.

Eighteen-year-old Marguerite Pearson left America with a broken heart in the shadow of World War II. She found a new life in Europe but forever mourned what she left behind. As the truth about Marguerite's extraordinary history - her forbidden love affair and her family's treachery - is slowly revealed, more people are drawn into the puzzle that Jane and Phillip have pieced together, and one among them will inherit the most unexpected gift of all.

Loved it

I really enjoyed listening to this and the characters were wonderful. Being older myself the love story is especially refreshing.

Family Outcasts and Nobility

This is an Okay story about a family during the 1940s and the lengths the father and mother is willing to go in order to suppress an event that will surely bring shame, ridicule, and ostracization by the community. I certainly believe that extreme actions were taken during the 1940s to hide certain embarrassing things from family, friends and neighbors, but somehow this story was a little over the top for me. Maybe it's because I don't know how the super rich lives!

I purchased this listen during a daily deal for $2.95. In my opinion, it is not worth a credit, but an okay listen if only for the voice of the narrator alone!.

The narrator was very good... a beautiful voice that I could listen to everyday.

Too predictable!!

The concept of the story was interesting but all the characters were too perfect and predictable. Much repetition of information without delving into each character below the surface. Had not read anything from this author in about 20 years and now I remember why I quit. Couldn't wait for it to end.

Easy and pleasant

This is a sweet story... Easy but fairly predictable. If you are looking for relief from a meaty, complex book, this is a pleasant rest stop.

Interesting Storyline

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Felt like the story ended too abruptly.

What does Dan John Miller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He does good female and male voices.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I always want to finish Danielle Steele books in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

A little too coincidental for me.

Bittersweet destiny story

One of the few Danielle Steele books I've ever identified with. Feeling different and later discovering why is a bittersweet time. DS sure does a great job capturing the estranged feelings and obstacles some of us go through. So glad this story had a happy endings. Makes for good day dreams.

thoroughly enjoyed this story!

loved the story, no big surprises but a gentle story of past and future entwined. love stories were good, not overly dramatic or explicit. typically I read legal thrillers so this was a very pleasant change of pace. i liked the characters and the narrator did a fine job.
