Publisher's summary

After finding herself the subject of a powerful psychic attack in the 1930s, famed British occultist Dion Fortune wrote this detailed instruction manual on protecting oneself from paranormal attack. This classic psychic self-defense guide explains how to understand the signs of a psychic attack, vampirism, hauntings, and methods of defense.

Everything you need to know about the methods, motives, and physical aspects of a psychic attack and how to overcome it is here, along with a look at the role psychic elements play in mental illness and how to recognize them.

This is one of the best guides to detection and defense against psychic attack from one of the leading occult writers of the 20th century.

Great book, poorly read

A classic of occult literature, for good reason. However, the reader mispronounced and mangled a great many words, both in the technical vernacular of occultism and in standard English.

Wonderful Book, Really Bad Narration

This is a classic in occult literature, which is why it’s especially strange that they chose a man to read a book by a famous WOMAN occultist. Even worse, as others have pointed out, the narration is bizarrely robotic, and the narrator very frequently mispronounces even relatively basic words (the most egregious being the use of a soft “c” in Hecate.) It sounds as if he’s reading football plays, and it doesn’t match up at all with Fortune’s commentaries about being an employee in an Edwardian-era school and the like. It’s so bad I’m not even going to be able to finish it. This excellent book, and Dion Fortune, deserve better.

A classic work

I’m happy to find Dion Fortune’s books here on audible. If you like her work, this book a great blend of psychology and occultism.

Great book, bad narrator

I love Dion Fortune's writing but this narrator was very distracting. Mispronunciations combined with a simply annoying vocal timbre made me very hesitant to finish. But, if you can get through the first hour it's a great listen.

Attractive

Listening to the words from Dion was quite stimulating. She is quite wise and self assured. Just alone by how well she articulates herself, you find the information able to sink in easier. I believe this book is a must reed for any practice that involves energy work.

Love it!

The narrator is the perfect fit for this book! The way he reads really conveys the message in an appealing and interesting way.

Thanks but perhaps a better more modern narration

Reading is best but I appreciate the effort. Listened whist driving. It did keep me awake but need to revisit as it feels like the 60’s when I’m in 2023. Important message, want a new narrator for my his one please!

Excellent work, with one caveat...

I was glad to see this excellent and foundational work released on audiobook, but there is one issue to which I must take exception — and that is the reason for taking it down to 4 stars.

The editor has removed all references to Christianity from the audiobook. Personally, I am speaking as a pagan who left the Church and have no use whatsoever for Christian orthodoxy. I also have no desire to become a Christian heretic. I truly have little to no sympathies towards this faith.

But that said, to edit those parts of the book out is to obfuscate the meaning and original intent of a work first published in 1930. There are also things that can be learned from her through the viewpoints (including her criticisms), and entire formula were removed without replacement.

It is still a foundational work, but I would recommend this audiobook in tandem with the unabridged text.

did not give a lot of practical techniques.

did not give a lot of practical techniques. The author wasn't very objective with his information that he shared.

Narrator…yikes

I feel the content was very interesting but the narrator was not appropriate for this material. It was read as if each sentence was a news flash. Almost like the old “movie phone” guy telling you about movies. Was quite annoying because there was no depth or difference in tone thru entire reading of the book. I’m sure the voice would work for other material but found this very painful to listen to even though content was pretty good.
