Publisher's summary

Everyone leaves.

Love is risky business when you’re an assassin. Helena Madigan has lost loved ones to the family business before. Now that she’s in charge, she’s determined never to risk her heart again. Except every time Celia enters the room, she takes Helena’s breath away.

But the one time someone stays.

Celia Perri likes to be helpful.

She just wants to run the family auto shop, raise her kids, and help her brother plan his wedding. But when a drive-by shooting targets the garage, Celia’s simple life is upended. Now ensconced within the Madigan family, there’s no escaping Helena, the blonde bombshell she’s been crushing on for months.

It could cost her everything.

As the Madigans investigate, Celia witnesses their love and loyalty up close. And their business. Instead of being afraid, she sees a place for herself among them. She could be a confidant and caregiver - if only Helena would stop pushing her away. If only she’d admit their mutual attraction might lead to more. And if only someone would stop shooting at them long enough to find out.

Queen’s Ransom is the fourth book in the Fog City romantic suspense series. It can be listened to as a stand-alone, but is best enjoyed after listening to Books One through Three of the series.

Great sorry.

I’ve been on the hunt for an FF story I can really connect to and while I had some trouble from not having listened to any of the previous books I really enjoyed This one and will have to go listen to the others!

Good

I liked this new novel in the Fog City series from Leyla Raine. I found the characters intriguing and the storyline solid but I did feel that this suffered from the narration. I think the narration fell flat and the voices weren't varied enough for my taste.

Who rules the world? Girls!

I have not read a lot of FF romances nevertheless I was really excited for this book since her series “Agents Irish and Whisky” has been of my favorite series ever. And I love her new venture into this exciting and thrilling romance of two badass women.

Helena loves being in control of her family business but baring the burden of Madigan family’s responsibility on her shoulders is not an easy task. For her, relationships are a luxury and true love is just a pipe dream she doesn’t dare to dream of. Celia has been living a quiet life running her family auto shop, raising her kids and seriously crushing on Helena. These two women have sizzling attraction between them but they are from two different works. However when a situation brought Celina to entangle with Helena and her family business, Helena found herself not being able to run away from her true love, Celina, the woman she’s been dreaming of.

With Leyla’a brand of thrilling and exciting action full of drama, I fell in love with this blonde bombshell of a badass woman and her lovely girlfriend who would stand by her no matter what. They really compliment each other well with different personalities and I’m all for their romance and action. I think this wrapped up the series quite well. Loved it.

Great listen!

This is such a great addition to this series. I definitely would read this series in order to get the whole story. I love Helena and Celia together. They are both exactly what each other needs. Samantha Garcia does a great job with this narration.

📖 Story comment: Needs to be read as part of the series for the background of the story. Good addition to the series, characters and plot were interesting enough. It's nice to see a story with two strong women and I would have liked to see more interaction between them developing their relationship with Celia's kids. I'm no prude, but there was a lot of unnecessary use of the "F" word in this one for me.

🎧 Narrator comment: I understand why there was a narrator change for Queens Ransom, it makes sense to have a female narrator for a F/F driven story. For myself personally, there are few female narrators who can effectively pull off male characters lower tones without sounding forced. I find it more convincing for a male narrator to do female characters than the other way around, and unfortunately picking up at the fourth book in a series with already established male characters just didn't grab me. The narration plays such a big part for drawing me in to the story, but I didn't feel any connection to this one at all (sorry).

“Queen’s Ransom” by Layla Reyne, Narrated by Samantha Garcia

I enjoyed this book very much. I really like mafia type books and this fits the bill. Helena Madigan and Celia Perri make a wonderful couple and their sexual attraction is strong.

The Madigan and Perri families come together and form strong bonds all the way around. Samantha Garcia does a good job with the narration!

A Great Story, Not So Good Narration

This is the fourth book in Fog City Series. I would read/listen to the previous books before this one. You might not understand a lot of things otherwise. This is a great story and I really enjoyed it. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters engaging. The characters were developed and thought out. Helena and Celia are the MCs of this book. I loved this story and will read/listen to the next. As good as the story was the narration on the other hand was not good. It was monotone and emotionless; I do think that she tried but it was a fail. Most of the time I didn’t know what character was talking or thinking. Most of them sounded the same and she was unable to have different voices for each character. Fortunately, I had previously read the book so I knew it was good because I had to stop listening to the narration. Unfortunately, I can recommend this book as a great read but not a good listen. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

Not for me

I was skeptical about even listening to this one, mainly because ff is not my forte, but I figured if it was included in the series, there was a reason. After listening, I’m not quite sure of that reasoning. Granted, it was nice to witness Helena in charge; I enjoyed the excitement included when Hawes was in charge. But, the excitement and suspense saved the rating.

If nobody has figured out my pet peeve by now, this audio stood firm, in my opinion. A different choice of narrator, or at least a second female, could have made a lot of difference. I know and understand the costs for these are high, and I respect that, but at least choose an enthusiastic narrator who is capable of variations in their voice.
