Unlikely tales are the most fun to tell. The long, strange trip Eddie DeGarmo has experienced over a half century in the music business is full of such stories. From playing keyboards at 10 years old in his first 1960s Memphis rock and roll band in the shadow of Graceland and Johnny Cash, to his own massive tours filling auditoriums and stadiums around the world with DeGarmo and Key, one of the first Christian rock bands. He successfully transitioned from his pioneering artist career to accomplish music executive cofounding trendsetting Forefront Records and discovered many groundbreaking artists.

Eddie then ascended to his role as president of the largest and most successful gospel and Christian music publisher in the world, Capitol CMG Publishing. DeGarmo's ride has been one for the ages. He has embraced the changes life sent his way. He has shifted gears, changed the key, and kept rocking. Along the way, you will be inspired, motivated, laugh out loud, and maybe even be a little challenged in your walk of faith and life.

Very enjoyable

Narration was great, as were the stories told. Love to find a good highly interesting book with smooth, non-grating tone in the narration. This has both.

A Great Story, Familiar and Real

Familiar names and places scatter this great story of the history of a great and underappreciated band. While I didn't listen to D&K much when I was younger, the stories told here has influenced me to give the band a listen; especially the early albums. I didn't start listening to CCM until 1985. I recommend this to anyone interested in the history of CCM.

The History of CCM by a Pioneer

I came to know CCM first through “Gentle Moments” by Evie, but “with Footnotes” by 2nd Chapter of Acts changed the game completely. When “This Time Thru” landed in my local store, I bought it immediately! Great rock & roll was hard to come by in those days, but DeGarmo & Key helped fill a great void. “Straight On”, “This Ain’t Hollywood” and especially “No Turning Back Live” continued that tour de force. Reading this book was like reading about the sound track of my life over the last 40 years, including my stint working in the industry for PMG. Encouraging, touching, informative and humorous, “Rebel for God” offers an incredible history of CCM, and thoughtful insights into the various struggles and obstacles faced by countless artists trying to make music with an eternal message. Thank you Eddie DeGarmo - a great read, though I wish it was your voice on the Audible version.

Loved It!

As someone who grew up listening to Christian music in the 70s, 80s and 90s it’s so fun to hear all of these stories and collaborations. Eddie Degarmo is a giant and I’m thankful to know his story and more about him. D & K made a massive impact for the kingdom of God!

Insightful, Eye-Opening, Enjoyable Bio

Mandatory reading / listening for baby boomer / Gen-X Christians / Jesus Movement and DeGarmo & Key fans. Honest, heartfelt and insightful. Immensely enjoyable. I wish Eddie DeGarmo narrated it himself, like the Charlie Daniels bio.

Trip Down Memory Lane

Really great and entertaining telling of the early days of christian rock from someone who was there on the frontlines. I saw D&K several times and their music was the soundtrack of my Bible college years so I loved hearing about each album and the behind the scenes look. Narrator did a great job as well.
