About this listen

Best-selling authors William W. Johnstone and J. A. Johnstone celebrate a legend of the American West - and the weapon that shaped a nation's destiny....

As a teenager, John McMasters won the Medal of Honor as a sniper for the Union Army during the Civil War. Thirty years later, McMasters lives a peaceful life in the Arizona Territory, raising a family and running cattle. These days, he needs eyeglasses to hit a distant target. But that doesn't stop his wife and four children from buying him a special present for his 50th birthday: a beautiful new Remington shotgun. Turns out, he's going to need it....

The Butcher gang has come to town. By the time McMasters learns of their arrival, they've invaded his ranch and slaughtered his family, hightailing it out of the county. McMasters wants revenge, using his new shotgun to hunt down those butchers like the animals they are. But he can't do it alone. His friend, Deputy US Marshal Daniel Kirkpatrick, is hauling six of the deadliest criminals in the country to a prison in Yuma. They're cutthroat killers, every bit as ruthless as the Butchers. But when McMasters points his Remington at their heads, they will become his killers....

Great Book

Wonderful narrator. Terrific story with a cast of characters and a couple of nice plots. Two thumbs up.

not his best book.

Not his best book. The story has great premise, but is slow to develop and meanders around allowing you to lose focus. Ending is awkward. He should have cut out the middle and focused on the ending.

The book focused on the. Crooks.

Most book focus on “normal people” going about their lives, this gave us a view inside the mind of the wrong doer. Good book!

Great Story Bad Narrator

This story definitely started slow but gets really good. Love the back stories of all the characters I just wish they picked a better Narrator. His voice makes me want to sleep.

I love Westerns

Good guy gets the bad guy. It's frustrating in our modern age to see evil people getting away with their crimes. I love a Western where the good guy gets the bad guy!

Slow and choppy

Good book that could have been better. The transitions were slow, back and forth conversation between characters was confusing at times, and for so much build up towards the conclusion it ended in a pop verses bam. Otherwise narration was good and the story was quick to draw attention. Also noticed a lot of audio issues in final
chapters which blipped out words was disappointing - but at that point I was ready for the book to end. Sorry, I wouldn’t recommend this one

Moronic

couldn't finish it. Author has absolutely no understanding of guns, bullets or basic physics.
complete waste of an audible credit. disgusting.
Update: Came back and finished. It didn't get any better.
Also, Al Kessel reads like a robot.

Not good

Rambles on and on, not holding my interest. Plus many stupid actions like going to a gun fight and not having ammo. Many times repeating same dull stories. Sorry not a good read.

just a poorly-written western.

I wasn't impressed at all, as a big fan of Louis L'Amour. this writer definitely does not capture the west and the men in it.
