About this listen

Remnants of Passion is a collection of essays that examine one woman's search for love, sex, and a sense of belonging from adolescence into middle age. It's equal parts queer and quotidian, ranging in its focus from lesbians fighting over the politics of penetration to first kisses, from apologies never made to a marriage held together with spaghetti.

Sarah Einstein lives with her husband, Dominik Heinrici, in Athens, Ohio, where she is pursuing a PhD in creative writing at Ohio University. Her work has previously appeared in journals such as PANK, Ninth Letter, the Fiddleback, and Fringe magazine. She has been awarded a Pushcart Prize and a Best of the Web and been listed in the "Notable Essays" section of Best American Essays. She is currently at work on a full-length memoir about her fascinated friendship with a homeless veteran.

Einstein and Heinrici maintain a blog, and you can find Einstein on Twitter at @sarahemc2. This is a short audiobook published by Shebooks - high-quality fiction, memoir, and journalism for women, by women.

Quick and dirty (in a good way)

If you could sum up Remnants of Passion in three words, what would they be?

Poignant, sexy, laugh-out-loud

What was one of the most memorable moments of Remnants of Passion?

Sarah in her tent at a Rainbow People Gathering, listening to people calling out to no one in particular, "We love you."

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene at the Good Vibrations vendor table.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh, laugh, laugh -- but it also struck home in very personal, very emotional ways.

Any additional comments?

I started listening to this today on a 30 minute drive, and I couldn't wait to get back in the car to listen to more.

Riveting. As captivating as a novel

What did you love best about Remnants of Passion?

Sarah Einstein writes essays with all the action, tension and passion of a novelist, and absolutely beautiful attention to language. Her honesty and vulnerability spill over in every sentence. You will, quite honestly, laugh and cry both.

What other book might you compare Remnants of Passion to and why?

She reminds me of a female David Sedaris.

Have you listened to any of Elinor Bell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not. From the standpoint of the audio, this book felt like it would have benefitted from a younger-sounding reader.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! And I did.
