About this listen

A gonzo ride through war-torn Yemen as only Chas Smith, the award-winning author of Welcome to Paradise, Now Go to Hell and Cocaine + Surfing: A Sordid History of Surfing's Greatest Love Affair, could provide. Follow Smith and his misfit band of merrymakers as they search for the true origins of Al Qaeda and endeavor to ride the unsurfed waves of Yemen all while exploring the slim opportunities for fun in the margins of our global war on terror and at any cost - even if it means eventual kidnapping by Hezbollah.

What a story!

Hats off to you Chaz. I can listen to this one over and over and never get tired of it. Not only is it a hell of a tail but the writing flows. It’s so easy to follow and unlike most audio books I listen to I never loose track of the story.
Love your fearless style and attention to detail. I’ll read anything you write my man. Keep it up 🤙

The best one yet!

Chas Smith hit a home run with Reports From Hell. His stories keep getting betting. Such a unique perspective on the Middle East. Makes me jealous that I never went to Yemen. And the General Petraeus section is a classic. The narrators voice was perfect for the story in an amusing way. Loved it!

Incredible

This book is hilarious and full of gonzo goodness. As an avid arabist, this book showcases the region well, but doesn't get hung up on the politics and instead showcases the absurd, irreverent conversations that exist when traveling with friends. I can't recommend this book enough!

Just a bit average

I really enjoyed Chas Smith's other books but this was disappointing. Maybe it was Peter Berkrot's excessively sarcastic and comedic tone. The book didn't need his suggestive delivery to emphasise that this was supposed to be a humorous book. Or maybe it was the nougat joke that wasn't funny the first time, let along the 10th.
