About this listen

Instead of a white knight, I got a bronze alien . . .

Rain: My life has never been my own, and that's never been more true than in the Rinian Galaxy. I've always had dreams that led me to believe my life is bigger than being the servant to some snake alien queen, but as each year goes by, I'm beginning to think my subconscious is lying to me. Until he shows up . . . the Kaluma with one blue eye who I've never forgotten. But he's not who I remember, and it seems this galaxy has broken another soul.

Kazel: I will rescue Rain, and I refuse to die trying. She's the reason I'm alive, and I always repay my debts, even if it means pretending to be someone I'm not to infiltrate the enemy's stronghold.

But this won't be easy. As I embark on the mission of my life, I know it will take all of my wits to rescue the beautiful, strong human and then convince her I'm her future . . . as her fated mate.

Contains mature themes.

Narration type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Rain - she was Cinderella to Drukil, the Vyspa (snake-like alien) who took over as head of the Rinian council. Drukil was creating an army of her spawn (monsters), and Rain was the weak human female that cleaned up after them all, working incessantly and doing whatever Drukil said, since she had seen Drukil tear apart even her own children for misbehaving. She tried to always remain as invisible as possible. Her life on earth hadn’t been much better, but at least she’d had a dog, she talked to all the time. She felt that she was the same to Drukil when they were alone. Drukil told her all her secrets and Rain filed them away for a later time when she hoped to somehow use them against the evil alien.

The Hero: Kazel - He is the older brother of Sherif, the ruler of the Kaluma. When they were younger, before his mother died and his father went crazy and started to rule with an iron fist and take advantage of his own people, Kazel was stolen from his planet, but even after he was freed, he hadn’t returned, knowing that Sherif would one day make a better leader than he would. He never knew what had happened with his father until he again met up with Sherif and his mate. Kazel had once been saved by Rain, and he wanted to return the favor, to pay his debt to her.

The Story: One day, Rain sees Kazel, who had come to see Drukil. She was distressed to see no recognition in his eyes when he looked at her and even more so when he bends a knee to Drukil and tells her that he wants to join her cause. She had known Kazel while they were both held captive by Drukil and Kazel was kept in a cell and forced to fight other species. She had known him as a gentle soul who would never hurt a fly, but he came in and offered to punish another alien whom he caught sneaking around. She wanted Kazel to be good again, like when she’d known him, but he fought against the other alien.

Little did Rain know that this was all a ploy Kazel had come up with in order to rescue Rain. Both were surprised when the first thing Drukil wanted Kazel to do was to breed with her pet human. Rain was not happy. She had never really wanted kids, and in this galaxy, she certainly didn’t want to put any child through that, especially one she carried inside her for months on end.

“It’s been you since the moment I met you. Before you saved my life. I want to make you my mate. In my mind you always have been.”

I really liked this one. Kazel’s rescue did not go as planned, of course, but that made the story all the better. Rain sees herself as a coward now, unlike when she first fought hard to help Kazel escape the prison they were held in. Like many other alien romances, this was a story of a journey that the main characters take to get back to their home. These books have some steamy scenes but not as many as some alien romance, which I like. I value story over sex, but still like a bit of steam in my romance. This series had a great ratio that was perfect for my tastes.

This audiobook was told in multiple points of view and was narrated in dual narration by Jillian Macie and Todd Mclaren. Jillian has a nice, expressive voice and always does a great job, especially with alien romance. Todd Mclaren is not one of my favorite narrators, in the last few books, I didn’t like his voice for the female characters, it was really quite distracting, especially in the intimate scenes. Though this book was mostly narrated by Jillian Macie, so I wasn’t bothered.

Terrific ratio of story and steam!

I loved the entire story. Having read the book, the audio brings the characters alive even more so. I loved the action, the devotion between the two main characters and of course when the Drixonians show up it’s always great!

What a fabulous story and ending to a great series!! I loved the epilogue with all the Drixonians, Kaluma’s and other strays they picked up along the way. Ella Maven is one of my top favorite Scifi Romance authors. She did such a fantastic job with all the interconnected standalones. Every time I see an audiobook release from Ella Maven, I get it immediately!! Loved this great series

The performance was comical in the first book because the female attempt to sound male seemed exaggerated. Through the next 3 books it became annoying. The male performance was very good and kept me to the end, but the contrast between the male lead and female attempt was sad!

Distracting attempt at male performance by female performer.
