Return to Regency

This was such a fun story! Catherine is struggling from the loss of her mother when her husband decides he's done and leaving with his current girlfriend. It's been 2 years but the change has been rough. Then her x throws her another curveball. So Catherine ends up spending her vacation alone, instead of with the kids as she had planned. During breakfast at the inn she meets Chris and grows to really like him. While Catherine is out shopping on her vacation she Is lead down an alley way the ends up being her secret porthole to the past. This is a crazy and fun adventure that's full of surprises and even a bit of danger. Nice job on the narration. Recency romance meets modern reality .

I received this audio book from the narrator free of charge in return for a review. I read a lot of historical fiction, historical mystery and sword & Sorcery Fantasy but romances really are not my favorite. I enjoyed the narration and performance quite a bit. The narrator does both female and male voices believably. The story is pretty simple two fans of history are hurt by divorce from selfish spouses are granted time travel by fairy God-people to experience their favorite period. Both find out real life back then was not all writers of fiction would make it out to be but they find and fall in love with one another. It is wrapped up with happy ending for all except the prick ex-husband and the historical story line bad guy.

Interesting!

I liked this book, I thought it was really interesting and different. We usually get someone who is young and has no children or has never been married.
I enjoyed listening to this audiobook and others might too.
I would highly recommend it.

Fun Regency 😊

This is a fun yet different regency romance. It incorporates time travel with a good story and a splash of adventure. It's a well written tale of second chance love. The narration was spendid. Her pleasant voice made the characters come alive and kept the story fresh and interesting. I recommend to anyone who likes a different regency romance.

Enjoyable story

An interesting and a bit of an unusual twist on a time travel story. With travel back and forth between the two time periods, mystery, jealousy, misunderstandings, ruthless people and some cozy romance, this audiobook is an easy listening, enjoyable story with a few twists and some nice details of Regency times. Melanie Fraser’s (narrator of the audiobook) smooth British accent fit the story perfectly, especially since it was set in Bath, England. She gave the characters individual voices, kept the story moving forward at just the right pace and really contributed to the enjoyment of the story. An entertaining story with potential for a follow-up book.

Great Listen!

I really enjoyed listening to this original story. Typically I don't listen to many time-travel stories, but this one pulled me in. I thought it was great that the main characters were able to go back and forth to regency Bath. The imagery in the story was so well done, it painted vivid pictures in my mind. I found the book to have some endearing characters along with some unexpected humor as well. I liked the fairy godfather a lot. Melanie Fraser added to the book with her distinguishable voices for the various characters and the emotions she put in. This book is definitely a feel good listen by Audrey Harrison. Without giving away spoilers, I loved the ending.

Refreshing Take on Time-Travel

Return to the Regency by Audrey Harrison is a time-travel historical romance set during the Regency period and the Napoleonic Wars. While the romance in this book is subtle, there are multiple scenes with affection, adventure, and near-death experiences for our heroes.

The story begins with recently divorced Catherine who is still in shock from the abrupt end to her marriage and the death of her mother. When her ex-husband takes her two teenaged children on holiday, she visits the Bath Christmas Market in homage to the memory of her mother. While in Bath Catherine finds a fairy godmother and a gateway to the Regency period. After traveling back in time 200 years to Regency Bath, Catherine is surprised to find Chris - another contemporary guest who is also recovering from a divorce. The rest of the story involves Catherine escaping the machinations of a fortune hunter, and Chris escaping the clutches of death.

Melanie Fraser did a fantastic job narrating this audiobook. She really brought the characters to life, giving each character their own distinct voice. Melanie's crisp British accent and soft refined tones were perfect for this audio and really contributed to my enjoyment of this book. I look forward to listening to other audiobooks narrated by Melanie.

Light-hearted Regency Time Traveling

4 1/2 stars

From the Blurb: "Catherine wishes the last year never happened. After losing her mother and her marriage in quick succession, each day is a brand new struggle. When her ex-husband drags her kids halfway across the world, she visits the Bath Christmas Market, just hoping to put something good in her life. She never expected find a gateway to the past..."

Katherine used to visit Bath, England with her mother, but when her mother died and her marriage fell apart, Katherine didn’t return. But when her ex and his new love interest take her children on a trip, Katherine decides to give Bath another try. Once there, just in time for the Christmas Market, she discovers that she’s been granted a chance to go back in time and visit the Regency. In Bath, she meets a man, Chris, who also has the ability to visit the past. They form a fast friendship. While in the nineteenth century, Katherine finds herself the target of a fortune hunter who thinks she’s wealthy. She and Chris join forces to undermine the man’s attempt to force Katherine into marriage. What follows kept me listening.

This book is interesting, it’s a bit of a mystery and is filled with lovely details of Regency times and humor. There are some twists and turns, and it wouldn’t be much of a Regency without a touch of romance, but that’s not a problem as there is a nice dollop of fluffy stuff worked into the book. The secondary characters are an agreeable addition and add to the tale. Readers do need to suspend disbelief at times, especially when it appears that the characters can go back and forth between the two time periods, and move physical objects between them, with no problem.

The narration was first-rate. I’ve listened to several books by Melanie Fraser, and she never fails to present an excellent performance. On those rare occasions where the story lags just a little, the narration picked things up and kept me listening.

Now, to the one thing that annoyed me in this audio book: dialogue tags; there are far too many of them. For some reason, Audible won’t let me go back and listen to the clips I bookmarked in this book, but I was able to find a couple of examples. In a conversation that would cover between one-quarter to one-half of a page in a print book, these are the tags:

Susan persisted
Katherine said quietly
Susan said
Katherine admitted
Katherine smiled
Susan said
Katherine asked
Susan admitted
Katherine suggested with a laugh

In another scene, about the same length:

Susan asked
Katherine said, chewing her lip
Katherine asked
Susan answered, unhelpfully

For such short discussions, those are a lot of dialogue tags. Some tighter editing would have helped avoid this.

Still, I enjoyed this book and listened to it happily as I walked and cooked. If you enjoy books that take place during the Regency, chances are that you will enjoy this one, too.

I received this book as a gift from the narrator. Her generosity had no influence on the opinions I express in this review. Those opinion are my honest response to this audio book.

Another great listen!

Audrey Harrison has a knack for creating Regency Romances. They are complete and real and palpable with characters you absolutely adore. With this listen, Harrison threw in time travel and raised the genre to an entirely new level!

The two main characters, Catherine and Chris, are the HEA you just want to see. They've both been through a lot. When they find each other, both in present day and 200 years earlier, a lot of issues are brought to the surface and through the crazy, wonderfulness happens.

Fraser's narration has never been better. She has a way of turning a phrase that makes you think she lived during the Regency period. She's really something special.

There are some wonderful subplots and dastardly deeds with this listen as well. All great fodder for a great HEA.
