Publisher's summary

She is firmly on the shelf. He needs a wife for his motherless children. Surely nothing would go amiss in their quest to find true love?

Miss Phoebe Westbrook wishes she was anywhere other than at Lord Livesey’s house party. Family loyalty and duty forced her to accept the invitation. When she overhears Lord Livesey’s opinion of her, she knows he feels the same. Determined to make the most of his library whilst visiting, she soon finds herself being drawn into the lives of Lord Livesey and his children, whether she likes it or not.

Meanwhile, Lord Livesey has lived a lie. His marriage was not the love match everyone presumed. His children are strangers to him. After the death of his wife, he hid from the world. Persuaded to host a house party in which he’s now trapped, he scorns the women in attendance. After dismissing Phoebe cruelly, it seems that a future with her may be just the thing he's looking for....

An unconventional marriage proposal causes everything to be called into question. Misplaced values and hidden emotions will test any chance of a relationship they might have. Both will face hurdles they never anticipated, but one thing's for sure - life won’t ever be the same again. If you like simmering chemistry, troubled heroes and feisty women, you'll love Audrey Harrison's Regency tale.

Great romance!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story! The romance had simmering chemistry while still being clean. The characters were likeable and relatable. My only complaint about the writing style is there were an unnecessary amount of dialogue tags.

Good clean read in a regency writing style

I like that this book is written in more of a regency style than the “modern” style as it puts you more in the story. I wasn’t too fond of the hero for quite a bit, but he sappily groveled in the end, and a happy life was lead by all.

The narrator is ok, though I prefer more voice distinction. Once I got used to it and the characters, it didn’t bother me.

A Good Listen!

OK! So I really liked this book and all the characters, including the side characters and their stories! I also liked the narrator's performance. She really got the nuances of the characters. She characterized their emotions better than any narrator I have listened to, and I have listened to many. If you read some of the book reviews on Amazon one may be mislead about the enjoyability of the story. Don't pay attention or rather than read the book, listen to it instead. The hero was just as he should be. A much flawed character who developed exponentially as the story progressed. Or rather his "real" self emerged after the bruising of his first marriage. The heroine was as she should have been also. She valued herself and her demonstration of value of self showed the hero what he must do to win her hand.

I believe the narrator's performance made this book come alive figuratively and literally!!

Well written

Overall I thought this novel was well written and enjoyable to read. I would have liked a little more “action “ rather than the “he said “, “she said “ dialogue. The narrator had a lovely speaking voice but her voice didn’t change much between characters so frequently I didn’t know who was talking.

It’s okay

It’s a slow meander through a house party as guests and potential brides go about activities and conversations. It’s sometimes difficult to pick up quickly enough who is speaking, as some of the voices sound similar and some seem to change slightly from how they sounded earlier. Once you grasp who is who in the long list of characters and follow closely, it becomes easier. There are a couple of interesting threads, Point of view changes randomly, so keep an eye out for when it changes whose mind and eyes you’re seeing the story through.
