About this listen

Captain Worthington is injured in the battle of Trafalgar. Blinded by shrapnel, his life goes from being at the forefront of society to being almost cast off. He finds himself sitting with the wallflowers at a ball - something he doesn't take too kindly to.

Miss Amelia Basingstoke has no dowry and enough dreadful relations to ensure that even on her third season, she is unmarried and a confirmed wallflower. Her only friend is a large boisterous dog of dubious character who considers himself too good to chase dead birds.

A chance meeting between the pair frees the captain in ways that he had never thought possible since his injury.

A stubborn captain, an opinionated young woman, an unruly dog, and Christmas is approaching - what could possibly go wrong?

This story was so sweet! As a wallflower myself I found this ever so relatable.

The narrator did a great job.

This book would be great for fans of Donna Hatch and Georgette Heyer.

A sweet clean romance with just the right amount of humour and passion. It is well narrated and easy to listen to.

A lovely story

From the moment the story started I fell in love with Amelia. I enjoyed her quick wit and easy banter with Captain Worthington. I love these kinds of stories so much. I enjoyed every minute. Perfect beach read, even though I wasn't actually at the beach while reading it!
The narrator was flawless.

The Captain was blinded in a battle at sea. Amelia is visiting her odious aunt and cousin in London. They meet at the Captain's first visit to a ball after he was blinded. His best friend, Richard, places places him on the wallflower's bench where he first meets Amelia. She is not a raving beauty, nor is she wealthy. Certainly not the type woman the wealthy Captain courted before he was wounded. Also the reputation of her aunt and cousin, hungry man hunters, kept men from asking Amelia to dance because they feared she may be a man hunter too and they could be tricked into marriage. The Captain finds Amelia to be a wonderful conversationalist - witty and honest. They meet later in the week while Amelia is walking her big unruly dog, Samson. The Captain is walking in the park with his best friend, Richard. The dog and the Captan form an instant attraction. Samson is a natural born seeing eye dog and helps the Captain get around town without the aid of a person. He loves the independence he experiences with Samson. The Captain, Amelia and the dog continue to meet at the park and Samson's training as a service dog progresses. So does the Captain's relationship with Amelia.

Excellent story. It is well written and captivating. I enjoyed it from beginning to end, nonstop. The book is not very long. In fact it is the perfect length. It never bogs down. I highly recommend it for a well spent credit.

Amazing hero, heroine and dog

I truly enjoyed the progression of the characters as they developed. Amelia came to know her worth and Alexander became a person of depth and humility. Pippa Rathborne has a wonderful reverberating rich voice. Well done.

A very pleasant book.

This book was so well-written and the characters so well-developed that I had hoped it was a series. (I'm rather bummed that it's not although the epilogue was satisfying.)

Amelia and her captain was a love story that did not disappoint. The story was so strong that even though the author did not go into great detail about a room, or a person or a place, you found yourself completely immersed and feeling and seeing everything.

I loved that the story progression did not depend on angst or miscommunication or any silliness to keep it moving but instead was a subtle development of humans being humans and just figuring it out, warts and all. I cannot even begin to tell you how enjoyable this listen was.

If there is a fault with this listen, it's with the chapter transitions. As great as the narrator is, and she was awesome, there was such a long pause between chapter endings and beginnings that it became frustrating. That could be because I was anxious to keep listening (whatev, don't judge) but I did scream a time or two.

Now stop reading and download this book. It really is a great story!!

I DID NOT want this story to end!!!

The characters are unrealistic for the period in their views and beliefs, but in the modern sense they are likable and entertaining. And the story is short and inoffensive, every though, I suspect, rather forgettable.

I had to listen to the performance on 2.5x playback speed. It was too slow and sounded very pompous at normal speed. But at the increased speed the narration was bearable enough to listen to it in full. However, I can't say I am eager to discover this narrator's other performances...

Too fluffy, but entertaining.

Heroine gives hero depth. I read novel then purchased audible narrated by Pippa Rathborne. For audible lovers, I suggest you pass on the audible version. Narration was rushed like speed reading, no effort made to distinguish character’s voices and unemotional for the most part. As an audible production, it was terrible.

Lovely story…read it, don’t listen to it.
