About this listen

Assistant District Attorney Butch Karp is finally recognized for his heroic service to New York City when a group of politicians back him for the top job as Manhattan's district attorney. But a series of cases involving vigilante murders begins to reveal the true motives of those civil servants standing by his side. It's Karp versus the dirty city in one of Tanenbaum's most revealing and caustic legal thrillers - a stunning indictment of civil corruption and overreach.

Very interesting and dovetails in contrast to curr

I could not help but contrast and consider two murder trials happening currently...the Kenosha Wisconsin and Georgia trial.

The conduct of Judge Schroder in Wisconsin who do publicly, unashamedly being blatantly biased towards the prosecutors. I find his telling or commanding to refer to the murdered and injured not to be referred as "Victims" but as "Rioters as Looters" as a disgrace and not giving the murdered and injured no humanity and dignity!

I hope "Reveru Error" can be used to argue and remedy against this judge and how the trial was conducted!

There was a little to much cussing in the story.

There was a little to much cussing in the story. I think it could have been just as good with less cussing. I enjoyed the story. It keep you wanting to listen to find out what was going to happen next.

reliably good read

this is my third time through the Tannenbaum series. I read it once every decade whether I need it or not. great characters complex and interesting in the first 10 novels until the co-author dropped away. this audible version has only one, Marlene's voice. Marlene is a strong pushy even aggressive person and the performer on the reading has her talking in this little girl voice it always jokes me a little to hear Marlene speaking in a little girl voice. but I keep listening because I am such a fan of this series and I can refine her bellow to a Italian scream in my own head instead of the whiny little voice the actor gives her. this particular novel is when it really starts to get good my love of these characters and their lives as they unfold over many years. it's like a visit with friends.

Too many characters

This would have been better to read rather than the audio version. The narrator was good but the many characters were hard to get straight for the first half of the book. Too many were showing up in the story before the first set were developed enough to remember their names. I could tell if they were the bad guys or the good guys but I had some trouble with who was whom. Was it a cop or was it a member of the D.A.’s office? Good story but very confusing trying to keep that many characters straight in the audio version.

Life Never Gets Easier

Just when one thinks it’s solved, they trust the wrong tip. If I can see it coming, by don’t they? I could never write the whole story. I’m not a police procedure person. I did like the plot and ending!

So good

This was so interesting. The story moves very quickly. I really enjoy these books based in New York city in the 70's. Karp is such a good guy, and Marlene is hilarious. The narrator is excellent. I wish more narrators were as talented as this one.

Another Good Installment In The Series

Tanenbaum returns with Karp and Ciampi - two ADA's in the NY prosecutor's office, also a couple out of the office. In this installment of the long running series drug dealers are being killed across the five buroughs. The questions are simple - by whom and who is set to gain from the murders?

Ciampi is working a serial rape case. She is sure there is a pattern and just as sure he will escalate. But rape isn't a priority in the DA's office and she wants to pursue the pattern angle of the crime. Finally one of the victims presents her with the opportunity to explore the pattern angle.

At the same time the drug killings become too close to home for the NYPD. Is a cop killing drug kingpins? Why?

And Karp is being wooed to be the next DA by powerful men with the money to make it happen.

The story-lines dovetail nicely and the wrap up is perfectly imperfect.

This book dates the series as Ciampi continues to drink and smoke during her pregnancy. Otherwise this is a great listen- you feel like you are sitting in a chair in the corner of the room watching those with the best intentions battle the bureaucracy of the DA's office where you never get everything you want but you can still 'put asses in jail'.

Didn’t finish

Couldn’t get past the language, sexism, racial stereotypes and police brutality. I know this was written in a different time but readers should be aware. On the other hand it’s good to see how far we have come.

I DID NOT like that the narrator...

I didn't appreciate the narrator being a different ethnicity. It would have been more authentic if the narrator chosen was in sync w/ who the characters were..
