About this listen

Lisa Gardner's next thriller following her runaway New York Times bestseller Find Her takes her wildly popular brand of suspense to new heights.

Is he a hero?

Eight years ago, Sharlah May Nash's older brother beat their drunken father to death with a baseball bat in order to save both of their lives. Now thirteen years old, Sharlah has finally moved on. About to be adopted by retired FBI profiler Pierce Quincy, and his partner, Rainie Conner, Sharlah loves one thing best about her new family: they are all experts on monsters.

Is he a killer?

Then the call comes in. A double-murder at a local gas station, followed by reports of an armed suspect shooting his way through the wilds of Oregon. As Quincy and Rainie race to assist, they are forced to confront mounting evidence: the shooter may very well be Sharlah's older brother, Telly Ray Nash, and it appears his killing spree has only just begun.

All she knows for sure: he's back.

As the clock winds down on a massive hunt for Telly, Quincy and Rainie must answer two critical questions: Why after eight years has this young man started killing again? And what does this mean for Sharlah? Once upon a time, Sharlah's big brother saved her life. Now, she has two questions of her own: is her brother a hero, or a killer? And how much will it cost her new family before they learn the final, shattering truth? Because as Sharlah knows all too well, the biggest danger is the one standing right behind you.

Perfection!!

After 9 years Lisa Gardner releases a new novel in her FBI Profiler/Pierce Quincy & Rainie Connor series. As a fan of Gardner's police procedural series (D.D Warren, Tessa Leoni, and FBI Profiler) I've been disappointed in two of her more recent novels (Crash & Burn and Fear Nothing). She is back at her very best with Right Behind You. The background to the plot is well covered in the publisher's summary, so I will not repeat it here.

While this novel has all that you would expect from a great suspense thriller, its real strength is that it is a wonderful story of love, family, hope, and recovery from horrible beginnings. I've read or listened to all of Gardner's non-romance novels. Right Behind Her is my new favorite. One of my complaints about her novels in the past has been frequent changes of narrators. The Teri Schnaubelt and Luke Daniels pair are very, very good; I hope Gardner will keep them. In this novel the author tells most of the story from the first person perspective of some of the characters with limited use of third person narration. I doing so she makes the novel more interesting.

I highly recommend Right Behind Her.

Great book!

What a awesome read! Can't wait to listen to it again honestly. Never get tired of her writing style and the twists and turns off the plot. I had the wrong character pegged for the bad guy... Bet you will too!

Lots of ups and downs and intrigue!

This is one of those few books where you're just not sure how the author is going to pull everything together but then amazes you when they do!
There were so many underdogs in the story that I was rooting for. And even felt guilty for rooting for one, LOL.
Definitely worth the read!

Awesome

I love a novel that is chock cull of complex characters, and an author who understands that motive is as important as action. Thanks again for an engaging read. The narrators were also PERFECT!

Zero or Hero--exciting, interesting with drawbacks

The story is great. It is exciting and interesting, and I knew who done it just part way through, and I was wrong. Humbling but clever.

Gardner brings back the well-loved duo of Rainey and Quincy, so you know it will be good there. But she also introduces two new great people with deep substance and hearts big enough to enfold a very troubled teen. They create the most emotion and empathy in the story.

The reasons the book loses a star all around:

1) The decision to split the narration. Both narrators are great. Each one voices the POV of a different main character. The problem with having 2 narrators is that you get everyone voiced in 2 different voices. So you hear Quincy voiced by Luke Daniels, but also by Teri Schnaubelt. This is annoying at first; however, it did smooth out about half way through when you realize that this is exactly how we all interact with those around us. I hear and remember Tom Sawyer in my voice in my head, and you hear him in your voice in your head. It ended up being okay, but this is not my favorite decision.

2) The story bogs down in pedantry. Everything Lisa Gardner did not know going in is lectured to us: the contradictions in abusive homes; emotional trauma; the effects of Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD)--bonding, control, rage, antisocial behavior; human tracking; shelter dogs turned SWAT dogs; gun safety, gun care, and shooting technique.

3) Too much of the ending is explained rather than acted. Nearly every mystery story has some of this but here it went on too long; more should have been worked into the action.

4) The actual cause of all the trouble is a little out there, necessitating several great coincidences to bring everyone together to create the drama.

Despite these flaws, the story will affect you, touch you, and perhaps motivate you to some social action. You will still cheer for the people able to overcome great tragedy, to choose whether they will be Zero or Hero, and those with love enough to help them.

Gripping and Intense Suspense Thriller

There was so much about this book to love. The story is fast and intense, and you can't stop turning the pages. The characters are so very real. Of course if you know Lisa Gardner, you know Quincy and Rainie, this is her eight novel about these criminal profilers. They are a big hit with her fans. But Telly and Sharlah...you have to love their perseverance. This is their story.

Lisa Gardner is a true master at writing crime thrillers. Her research for this book, on spree killings, trail work, guns, youthful offenders, and childhood trauma, was skillfully used to make Telly and Sharlah's story feel real and authentic. It's psychological suspense at its best, gripping you both intellectually and emotionally.

Right Behind You has so many intricate layers that you can't help but be captivated. It was a intense story of children in foster care and the love and care they may, or may not get. It's the thought-provoking story of what it means to be a family. It the suspenseful story of a spree killing and herculean efforts of a community to catch the murderer. But most of all, it's the gratifying story of the undying love between a brother and his sister.

One of the best crime thrillers of 2017. A must read!

The audio version of this book was narrated by Luke Daniels, Teri Schnaubelt, who both did a fabulous job.

a very good lisa Gardner

I have listened to most of Lisa Gardner's books. I was glad to revisited Quincy and Rainie.

We think we know what happened…and we are just wondering why it happened after all these years.

The characters felt real, with Quincy, a former FBI profiler, front and center in the search, and his wife Rainey, who was also involved, worked to keep Sharlah balanced as emotions ran high. Sheriff Shelly Atkins showed us that “small town sheriff” did not define her: she had skills, and her ability to stay calm in the face of the intense actions made her a great part of the team.
