About this listen

An unprecedented look into the personal and creative life of the visionary auteur David Lynch, through his own words and those of his closest colleagues, friends, and family - adapted by David Lynch from the print book especially for this audio program.

In this unique hybrid of biography and memoir, David Lynch opens up for the first time about a life lived in pursuit of his singular vision, and the many heartaches and struggles he’s faced to bring his unorthodox projects to fruition. Lynch’s lyrical, intimate, and unfiltered personal reflections riff off biographical sections written by close collaborator Kristine McKenna and based on more than 100 new interviews with surprisingly candid ex-wives, family members, actors, agents, musicians, and colleagues in various fields who all have their own takes on what happened.

Room to Dream is a landmark book that offers a one-time all-access pass into the life and mind of one of our most enigmatic and utterly original living artists.

Critic reviews

“Insightful...an impressively industrious and comprehensive account of Lynch’s career.” (The New York Times Book Review)

“A memorable portrait of one of cinema’s great auteurs...provides a remarkable insight into [David] Lynch’s intense commitment to the ‘art life.’” (The Guardian)

“This is the best book by and about a movie director since Elia Kazan’s A Life (1988) and Michael Powell’s A Life in Movies (1986). But Room to Dream is more enchanting or appealing than those classics.... What makes this book endearing is its chatty, calm account of how genius in America can be a matter-of-fact defiance of reality that won’t alarm your dog or save mankind. It’s the only way to dream in so disturbed a country.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

There have been a few books recently which I have had in both physical form, and in audiobook, in which each is different. The fact that David Lynch goes off script occasional really makes this.

I thought this was great!

I am a David Lynch fan. I liked hearing him talk about his life. From his childhood to current day. He speaks about his personal life and his professional life. And, how the two intertwined. He has an interesting way of telling a story. He is creative, kind, and fun. I would recommend this book to other David Lynch fans.

It was wonderful hearing Lynch tell his story in his own words and voice. Made me want to revisit all of his films and especially rewatch all of Twin Peaks

Amazing book

If you enjoyed David Lynch’s previous memoir catching the big fish, you’ll get a lot out of this one. I would have appreciated more granular levels of details in regards to his previous productions but there is still a lot of really good info here. There’s also a lot of schilling for the church or transcendental meditation, as you could probably expect. As always with the cult of David Lynch it’s a mixed bag, but a beautiful and mysterious and hilarious one that his fans will get a lot from. Here’s to the art life and taking the plunge for yourself.

I haven’t looked at things in a long long time. Listening to this book and hearing things about David Lynch again has made me see things again. Things like portals on ceilings, and odd color smears throughout the sky. This book was brilliant in that it used both Lynch and other voices to narrate his story. I am happy that I got to live during the time of an artist as great as David Lynch.

Brilliant and warming and inspiring

16 hours of really well done biography, storytelling, and observation from David and Kristine (and others she reads). Big fan of David, his movies, his personality, and this audiobook really delivers. From the 50s to the 2000s, really paints a picture. Great book to take a walk to.

This book will keep you in line with morals, doing things for the good and sake of art. Very inspiring book especially if you are a director or screenwriter.

Must listen especially if you are a filmmaker trudging threw the flood that is show business

I think I could listen to Lynch all day. He is a natural-born storyteller. I have not read the print version, but having Lynch read/tell us stores has to be a huge bonus in consuming this biography/memoir. Lynch really incorporates his personality into his reading which adds so much to this book. Full of great stories of his childhood and young adult life as well as lots of insight into each of his works. Very interesting.

Lynch reading this adds so much to the book!
