About this listen

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The clearest and best book out there to get you on the path to riches. This one’s special!”—Jim Cramer, host of CNBC’s Mad Money

“Great tools for anyone wanting to dabble in the stock market.”—USA Today

Phil Town is a very wealthy man, but he wasn’t always. In fact, he was living on a salary of $4,000 a year when some well-timed advice launched him down a highway of investing self-education that revealed what the true “rules” are and how to make them work in one’s favor. Chief among them, of course, is Rule #1: “Don’t lose money.”

In this updated edition to the #1 national bestseller, you’ll learn more of Phil’s fresh, think-outside-the-box rules, including:
• Don’t diversify
• Only buy a stock when it’s on sale
Think long term—but act short term to maximize your return
• And most of all, beat the big investors at their own game by using the tools designed for them!

As Phil demonstrates in this book, giant mutual funds can’t help but regress to the mean—and as we’ve all learned in recent years, that mean could be very disappointing indeed. Fortunately, Rule #1 takes listeners step-by-step through a do-it-yourself process, equipping even the biggest investing-phobes with the tools they need to make quantum leaps toward financial security—regardless of where the market is headed.

Critic reviews

“Town's investment guide is manna from heaven… engaging and accessible… Town’s ability to break down that philosophy into a detailed, step-by-step program that can be understood by any reader with basic math skills is unique… will leave readers feeling empowered and ready to manage their money themselves.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)

A refreshing departure from those boring investing books… If you're tired of being shut out of how exactly the rich guys on Wall Street make money, this important book will teach you how to run with the bulls. It's priceless.” —Elizabeth MacDonald, Senior Editor at Forbes Magazine; regular, “Forbes on Fox”"]

Rule #1 is probably one of the most inclusive, no nonsense, fundamental books about investing in the stock market I’ve ever read. This book is a must-read for everyone; from beginner students of the market to super know-it-alls.” —Danielle Hughes, President and CEO, Divine Capital Markets LLC

Great book that teaches you the basics.

Easy to understand, got a lot out of the book.
Audible chapters aren't asinthe book!

Ebook or Actual book is better

The book has a lot of Graphs, Calculations and Examples which are easier to understand if you can see them.

RULE #1 RULE #1 RULE#1

Would you consider the audio edition of Rule #1 to be better than the print version?

I haven't tried the print version but i wouldn't mind trying it

What was one of the most memorable moments of Rule #1?

n/a

Which scene was your favorite?

n/a

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

n/a

Any additional comments?

Oh my God if i had a penny for how many times rule #1 was mentioned in this book, i'd be bathing in money. The repetitive monotony of rule #1 irritated me and that was why i could not complete the book. It was in every single sentence and i kept waiting for the rule that i failed to realize when he stated it. :/

Great information

Any additional comments?

I need to start implementing the rule. It was a great listen and it made more sense to me and how I've viewed the stock market. I will return to it when I need some empowerment! I did, however, purchase this book after listening to it. There is so much I want to refer to and note! The graphs also make more sense :) but I'm happy I purchased it on audible first, as now I can go straight to what I need in the book.

I wish I had read this when I was in high School.

I read through it once and now I'm going to go read through a second time and take notes.

Good; but need the book as well.

This is an excellent book covering the basics of investing. I found that I needed to order the hardcover book as well, as much of the data on the audiobook is difficult to follow just by listening (a number of charts, formulas, and tables). Paired with the book, this is an excellent listen. As an audiobook alone, it is an enjoyable listen, but you won't get the full benefit of the text.

A favorite.

I haven't tried the investment methods prescribed in the book yet, but it seemed to make perfect sense especially after reading up on Warren Buffet. What I like the most about this book are the baby steps that Phil walks us through. I love the myths of investing section in the beginning of the book and the criticism of diversification and dollar cost averaging based on the assumed rationality of the market. Love the fact that we wouldn't need to keep track of hundreds of companies and simply invest in a few companies we love.

Great Book!

I am new to investing and stocks. This put a lot of things into perspective for me. Great book for beginners. I understood everything and it helps me have guidelines when choosing what stocks to buy. (I did purchase the physical book also to look over the formulas)
