Critic reviews

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." ( AudioFile magazine)

Not a lot of vocab learned in this lesson, but the repetition makes it easy to remember. Nice that they revisit words learned earlier in the lesson to help with recall.

I bought these because they were on sale on Audible one day and I’d always wanted to learn Russian. I listened to these on the train and though at times I napped while listening I still learned. I’ve listened to this book several times and I can understand individuals speaking Russian the news. Give it a go and see what results you get.

I good way to learn a new language

usually it's almost impossible for me to learn a foreign language this method really breaks it down and audible lets you slow the speaker down also so now I actually know around 50 Russian work very excited can't wait until next months book credit comes I'll do level 2!

I actually know 50 Russian words now!!!!

Excellent breakdown of how to say each word in Russian. Goes a little fast on conjugation of verbs (I want vs you want) so you have to pay close attention when you are learning I vs you. Other than that the pronunciation of words is clear. Lots of repetition to help you remember. If it goes too fast you can just back up and repeat a segment. Feels like you are learning to speak the language right away (vs just learning vocabulary).

Excellent for very beginner

What made the experience of listening to Russian Phase 1, Unit 01-05 the most enjoyable?

I do not consider myself good at language acquisition but Pimsleur changed my mind. I was able to learn the most important words and phrases quickly and retain them during a 3 month stay in Moscow for work. I plan to re-learn Spanish with Pimsleur and I think it will be fun and easy.

Has Russian Phase 1, Unit 01-05 turned you off from other books in this genre?

Rosetta Stone was not helpful for learning Russian and was a total waste of money.

Wow, I really picked up Russian quickly!

Excellent start to learning Russian. Plenty of repetition with constant 'flashbacks' to previous words. Time given for repeating is OK though sometimes I was still thinking and the answer came up. Maybe on more complicated phrases the time can be increased. Otherwise excellent.

Thanks to the reasonable repetition, and the ease of daily segments, this program was incredibly effective. I literally remember every single lesson.

My one complaint is the ridiculous talking speed of the male Russian speaker. Its not at first, but about half way through, its so fast that I have to constantly replay audio, which is a pain since I listen to this when driving my car. In some cases, I have had to use a translator app to type in the english so I could see the sometimes subtle pronunciation of new vocabulary or grammar.

If you are willing to do this, the program works perfectly.

Great but speaker is too fast

This is an excellent tool to learn, but it should be one of many. Inspite of how they talk about it in the opening, this cannot be the only thing you use to learn this language. I love the way they come back to every word and phrase you learn and tie everything together in-lessons. Definitely use this with other tools, and use the audio format for review. You can listen to this anytime, so it makes it wonderful. The pronunciation is very good, and I have tested the material with native Russian speakers. If you want to really learn a language, you need pronunciation and repetition. This audiobook and the others in this series do these things well, but there is too much to cover for this to be your only learning tool. I'm up to lesson 21 at the time of this review, and I will keep going with it alongside other tools.

An excellent tool
