Excellent. Use this first before Rosetta Stone

Paul Noble does an amazing job making French structure and grammar easy to understand, learn, and retain. I had been using Rosetta Stone, but found myself lost on structure. I then used Paul Noble's French and I had so many "a- ha, now I get it!" moments that I paused Rosetta and will finish Noble first. Amazing job. A definite must if yo want to learn French essentials.

Tons of material, simply explained!

Paul Noble does a wonderful job of explaining difficult language concepts simply, so that, by the end of the course, I had learned the basics of three French tenses without frustration. No long vocabulary lists. Instead, this focuses on how to put sentences together. I was surprised and pleased with how quickly and easily the material came. Highly recommend for those beginning to learn French!

Best Tool for Learning to Speak French

I studied languages in the past but I never could make it stick to actually be able to use them. I decided to pick it back up and learn French after not having studied it for over 20 years…and even then only for two semesters.

This was not the only tool I used, but it was by far the best one for helping me to feel comfortable speaking. I have only been studying it for 2 1/2 months and I am able to have full conversations in French…albeit very basic conversations.

You have to work at it; don’t listen to it straight through. Rewind and repeat as needed. I recommend listening to his books “French for Kids” and “Essential French in 2 Hours” first as it gives you a good foundation and this book progresses pretty quickly if you’re a beginner.

I loved it so much I bought every single one of his language books with the intent of (eventually) learning them all! Highly recommended for motivated learners!

Update:
I've been studying now for just under a year and, while no where near fluent, I can have basic conversations and can express what I am trying to say fairly easily. So much so, that I was able to get around France for 2 weeks with no trouble at all. This book is still my favorite tool. It gets you started speaking from day 1 (which was my biggest hurdle).

May people have said that the spoken French in this course is too fast. I disagree. You will have to pause, rewind, and listen again quite often...but it is no where near as fast as it is truly spoken. I think it is the perfect speed. Slower than normal but not too slow. I just can't say enough good things about this course. I still go back to this book occasionally for review/practice and just listen to the set from start to finish without pausing. This is a must buy and would be a great deal if they were charging double.

Disclaimer (or not):
I have no connections to the author or the book. I have not received any promotions or discounts for my review. I purchased this book on audible (on sale) and then after listening to it went back and purchased every other course by this author. I am simply enthusiastic about language learning and grateful to have found this tool.

Ideal for commuters / those on the go

First, I started this course with zero formal training the French. I do not speak any language fluently other than English, though I have taken various courses in Japanese, Spanish, German, and Latin.

Second, I have an hour-long commute and have been frustrated as other supposed 'audio' courses that are actually dependent on the text while the audio portion is a supplement.

These courses by Paul Noble are the reverse: they are designed to listen and practice along while listening without depending on text. There is a text supplement when you purchase the course for reference, but it is largely unnecessary, unless you are struggling with figuring out pronunciations.

Pros: Clear instruction, brief explanations of word origins or connections to English, repetition, and the courses build upon what you just learned: you start with a simple subject-verb, then add on from there until you have a basic conversational sentence and dialog.

Cons: Doesn't explain pronunciations too well, especially how to pronounce "R's", but does go through several minutes of how to pronounce "Tus". Also, sometimes his voice gets really soft and its difficult to hear what he's saying, but it is easy to go back a few seconds and listen again.

By the end of these courses, I was able to speak a few phrases with my wife who is close to fluent. But what is most important is that the course is designed to allow you to think and build your own dialog when you learn new words. It lays a great foundation to take the next step forward towards conversational French.

I was very happy with this purchase and immediately went to the next set of courses.

I highly recommend this for beginners who need something mobile that doesn't require dependency upon text to learn.

Parfait!

I studied French in high school and at university, but it has been years. I wanted to brush up before traveling again. Paul Noble brings it back so easily and teaches in the most practical method. No starting with “J’aime le cafe” and “J’aime le tennis”, etc etc. He dives right into the words and phrases that matter, while explaining helpful ways of remembering and associating words, learning those pesky verb conjugations, and making French very accessible. Recommend for both beginners and those with some French who want to refresh their skills.

Excellent!

An excellent, easy to understand explanation of many of the most important foundations of the french language. No long asides, no complex grammatical explanations, just well paced, concise information, and exceptional teaching! A word of warning, you won’t be speaking French perfectly after listening to this audiobook, as it’s more about the language foundations and how to *speak* than it is about vocabulary. That said, there’s plenty of IMPORTANT words to pick up here, and the skills it gives you will allow you to apply any vocabulary you learn/have learned from other sources in a practiced manner.

Great way to learn French

I’m combining this audio format with Babel and a text book learning approach and I couldn’t recommend the combination more. Paul Noble has me speaking well and the other combinations enforce my understanding.

Great Introductory Course to French

Firstly, I loved this complete course. Paul Noble's teaching method is VERY similar to Michele Thomas (for those of you familiar with his teachings) and very effective in the same way - It's essentially "listen & repeat" throughout the entire course, but also comes with a very useful PDF download that I would suggest adding to your space repetition method, ie: Anki deck to help remember what you've learned.

I started learning French using Pimsleur, which was effective in the same way, but I found it very boring and couldn't continue. This course really came in where that left off and I found no problem following the chapters without getting bored.

A few of the reviews are giving this a bad rating because of the similarities to the Michele Thomas courses, which is ridiculous. If anything, they should give a great review because of that!

Thanks for reading, everyone!
