About this listen

Dr. Elena Gardner learns an OB patient of her fiancé, Dr. David Merritt, is suffering frequent beatings at the hands of her husband. Despite Elena's advice, the wife refuses to take legal action against her abusive husband. David is so frustrated that he loudly and publicly voices his desire to beat the man senseless. When someone actually kills the husband in that fashion, David's offhand expression leads him to the sheriff's office. As the situation worsens, the two doctors form a partnership with a new attorney in town in order to fight a murder charge.

A well-written short read from a very good author

Rx Murder (Audiobook), my sixth read/listen from author Richard L. Mabry, entertaining & enjoyable. “I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. Meghan Kelly's narration made the book flow smoothly & quickly. I look forward to reading more from this author. Would you try another book from Richard Mabry and/or Meghan Kelly?

I think both author and narrator are good enough that I ran across another book by them I would not hesitate to read/listen to it but I'm not sure if I'd go so far as to seek them out.

What could Richard Mabry have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Done a little more research (actually, any research) about attorney ethics.

What three words best describe Meghan Kelly’s performance?

There is a lot good to say about Meghan's Kelly performance - great mastery of differentiating voices, great delivery of dialogue ...but...in the narration sections she was occasionally quick or staccato in her delivery.

Could you see Rx Murder being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Not enough book/story to become a movie but it was fine for a short book.

Any additional comments?

2 things seriously detracted from my enjoyment of this book:1. The lawyer in the book committed so many ethical violations he made my head hurt. Especially, when one sentence started "I don't know if I can do this ethically..." and the answer is an easy and resounding "No, you can't" - no mystery about that one, even for the new graduate he is supposed to be.2. Audio quality was off - there was a general difference in volume between the dialogue and the narration that I noticed. Worse than that, there were several times (half a dozen? maybe less? especially in the 2nd half of the book) when the volume got very low for a line or two. That was annoying. This audiobook was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

Performance ruined the story

Story line/plot could have been expanded or developed more. I have always enjoyed this author before but this was not his usual good quality. The worst was the performance. The voices were like cartoon characters especially a woman attempting to emulate a man - squeaky, squawky, falsetto, various accents etc. Ruined the entire listening.

Decent Novella

Any additional comments?

Disclosure: We received a copy from the author/publisher in exchanged for an honest review. This does not influence my review in any shape or form.

The story was definitely interesting but for me the narrator really made this story for me. I would definitely listen to more books narrated by Meghan Kelly.

The story was bit cliché abusive husband, pregnant wife and he suddenly ends up dead. I’m pretty sure that was a CSI MIAMI episode. I thought for sure the killer was obvious, I mean everything else was cliché how could I not know who the killer was from the very beginning. But the author was able to throw in some twists to really keep you on your toes.

I thought the story could have been better developed. I felt like the author missed opportunities to really add mystery to the story and so it wouldn’t have been so cliché. I felt like things were a bit rushed and disjointed, I’m still not sure how we got from point A to point B.

Missed opportunities really hurt this story for me but the narrator was great.

☤ A Perfectly Timed Mystery

☤ This is a great short story/whodunit written by Richard Mabry. It shows how the happenings in a small town can get out of control. A doctor knows that one of her patients is being domestically abused, however before anything can be done about it the husband turns up dead! Suddenly, the doctor's fiancé (also a doctor) is the prime suspect, due to his vocal statement a few days earlier.

☤ Who and how can we get this all sorted out?

☤ This thriller is just the right length to listen to on an evening in winter or on the beach in summer. While the subject matter is a bit serious, the book is lightly written without taking away from the crime.

☤ The author has done a wonderful thing with this medical thriller.

☤ I will sound repetitive, if you have read any of my other reviews of Meghan Kelly. Not only can she perform a book, she chooses the best books to perform. A perfect mix of severity in a relaxed atmosphere are performed almost flawlessly in the short story.

Quick listen but worth it

Any additional comments?

I'm not sure how the author was able to pack a complex mystery into a short novel but that he did. It was a whodunnit from the beginning with an interesting story line and enough characters (and potential culprits) to keep you guessing. I didn't see the ending (love it when that happens) but I would have liked a bit more build up to the reveal. Still, an overall good story with very good narration.

RX Murder

This was a very intriguing murder/mystery. You feel such compassion for the wife, and wonder why anyone even cares why the abusive husband died. And the end really has you wondering. Really fun short story.

Will the real murderer please stand up!

With Rx Murder, Richard Mabry has given readers a taste of his expertise in writing suspense stories. The novella keeps the pages turning (or in the case of an audible copy, the listening app rolling!) The author does a good job of the emotional subject of spousal abuse and the issues that surround it. Twists and turns to the plot, evocative characters and a surprise murderer are good reasons to pick up this book! Meghan Kelly does a great job of narration, making listening to the book an enjoyable experience.
