About this listen

Thirty-four years ago, Violet Sullivan put on her party finery and left for the annual Fourth of July fireworks display. She was never seen again.

In the small California town of Serena Station, tongues wagged. Some said she'd run off with a lover. Some said she was murdered by her husband.

But for the not-quite-seven-year-old daughter Daisy she left behind, Violet's absence has never been explained or forgotten.

Now, 34 years later, she wants the solace of closure.

Love the ABC series

This is the 2nd time I’ve listened to this series narrated wonderfully by Judy Kaye. She does an outstanding job with character voices and inflections. I’ll have to seek out more audio books narrated by her. Sue Grafton has made each book stand on its own even though it follows Kinsey Millhone through several years. So sorry that Ms Grafton was not able to finish Y and Z. RIP Sue Grafton

Kinsey fan

As usual Judy Kaye is top notch, I have come to know the voice so well after listening to every book so far. This book however was my least favorite of all. Kinsey's character in this book did not seem connected to the story line. I understand the difficulty in going back and forth over a span of 30-40 years in the story line, but this drags on. Many of the characters are able to recount details that happened long ago, which I find hard to believe. If this is your first venture into the Grafton alphabet, I suggest a different book.

YAWN

The narrator reminded me of my high school trig teacher...I had to struggle to pay attention and thus had to rewind numerous times. I was nearly lulled to sleep while driving. Plus I'm wondering why this story was even written. The ending clinched my decision to write a review-anticlimatic, loose ends and one has to question the intelligence of the main character. Based on her decisions, I'd rather higher a 3rd grader to watch my back!
