About this listen

Like The Last Temptation of Christ, Saint Francis is a fictionalized biography of a widely venerated Christian figure: Francis of Assisi, whose renunciation of his young man’s life of leisure and founding of a religious order dedicated to living in poverty and sharing the Gospels with all living things profoundly influence the ways in which Christians the world over worship and give service to their god even today.

Recounted in Nikos Kazantzakis’ striking prose through the eyes of the saint’s brother, Leo, the life of Saint Francis shines in this audiobook as a heroic example of inspirational leadership and boundless love for God and all his creatures.

This was done well, the pain of Francis seemingly trying to suffer for everyone. I found the story moving.

I’ve read on paper this book and most of Kazantzakis’ other books. The narration by Joshua Saxon of this book is amazing. One thing that it brings out is the unexpected beauty in particular lines and phrases. Listening to this book rather than seeing the words on paper brings to life this poetry. Like how the Odyssey wasn’t meant to be read, this book was meant to be listened to.

Narration makes this so much more accessible

For some unknown reason, the narrator decided to voice Francis in the manner of Christian Bale's Batman. There are inexplicably long pauses between every sentence as though to make all the words more significant. This ponderous and weighty narration is beginning to sorely strain my patience. I am not sure how much more of this I can take. Disappointed.
