About this listen

Gen X icon Ione Skye bares all in an achingly vulnerable coming-of-age memoir about chasing fame, desire, and true love in the shadow of her famous, absent father.

In 1987, sixteen-year-old Ione Skye landed the breakout role of Diane Court, the dream girl who inspires John Cusack’s iconic boombox serenade in the hit Cameron Crowe film, Say Anything. While Skye seemed perfectly typecast as an aloof valedictorian, she was anything but.

Deserted by her dad, the folk singer legend Donovan, Skye was a ninth-grade dropout who sought solace and validation in the eyes of audiences and dreamy costars like Keanu Reeves, River Phoenix, Matthew Perry, John Cusack, and Robert Downey Jr. But like her sixties It Girl mom, Skye’s greatest weakness was musicians.

On the heels of a toxic relationship with the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis, which began when she was just sixteen and he was twenty-four, the actress leapt into wedded bliss with her first great love, Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz.

But marriage was not the magical hall pass to adulthood Skye had imagined. Awakening to her bisexuality and desperately insecure, she risked her fairytale marriage for a string of affairs with gorgeous nineties “bad girls.” The dream marriage imploded, and Skye’s trust in herself and her future along with it.

Set against a backdrop of rock royalty compounds, supermodel cliques, and classic late-century films like River’s Edge, Gas Food Lodging, and Wayne’s World, Say Everything is a wild ride of Hollywood thrills as well as a lyrical reflection on ambition, intimacy, and a messy, sexy, unconventional life.

Amazing!!!!

Was completely pulled in until it was over. Love her even more for her open honesty and ability to share what she has learned in life.

So well written!

This memoir was fantastic. Ione didn’t try to gloss over her life. She shared wonderful, poignant, memories; but was candid about mistakes she made, and how she grew from them. I would recommend this book to anyone, but it’s especially nostalgic and resonant for a GenX-er.

Wow

I have always been a big fan of Ione Skye. She starred in some of my favorite movies of the 80s and 90s, Say Anything and Gas, Food, Lodging-which I can’t recommend enough! Not only this, but her brother’s movie, The In Crowd, played on repeat on HBO and I happily watched it over and over again. But, I never would have imagined what a fascinating life she had.
This memoir is amazing, not just because of the great stories about her many famous friends, but because she really lays herself bare and shares it ALL. you really get the sense that she took an unflinching look at her life so far and shared it honestly. I admire that. It also helps that her stories are just not ordinary. She has such a diverse group of people in her life spanning, music, film, art and fashion. It’s like creativity pulses through her veins and life.

So glad she wrote this. So glad I listened to this. What a gift.

She really SAYS Everything!

As a Gen x’er I identified with the themes of wanting more from men. Her journey, so courageous in the storytelling, is such a similar journey for so many women of our generation (albeit far less glamorous). I loved listening to her tell her story.

Vulnerable, honest and compassionate

As a gen-x listener, I felt right at home with Ione’s book. It felt like I was listening to stories about people I knew and a time so familiar. Ione, thank you for being vulnerable to your audience and allowing us to come inside for your experiences.

Great story and related person.

Growing up around the same time, loved all the stories around her life. They felt very relatable.
