With elegance and unsparing honesty, special correspondent for The Times of London, Anthony Loyd records this harrowing account of modern war. My War Gone By, I Miss It So exposes the unspeakable terror, visceral thrill of combat, and countless lives laid waste in Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War II. Unsatisfied by a brief stint in the British army and driven by the despair of drug dependence, the author was searching for excitement when he set out for Bosnia in 1993.

Story
The 29-day battle to liberate Manila resulted in the catastrophic destruction of the city and a rampage by Japanese forces that brutalized the civilian population. Landmarks were demolished, houses were torched, suspected resistance fighters were tortured and killed, countless women were raped, and their husbands and children were murdered. American troops had no choice but to battle the enemy, floor by floor and even room by room, through schools, hospitals, and even sports stadiums. In the end, an estimated 100,000 civilians lost their lives in the massacre.

Story
Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

A harrowing experience
What did you love best about Screams!?
A harrowing story and a very dramatic reading.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the second story the most. The writing was very good.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The narrator was very dramatic and the reading was very smooth, clear and full of emotion. There were some distracting mouth clicks and background noise, but after the first few minutes, I got used to it.
If you could rename Screams!, what would you call it?
The stories didn't necessarily make me scream, but they did make me feel quite terrified - perhaps something along those lines.
Any additional comments?
Don't listen to these alone at night.
