About this listen

"A tense, gripping SF house of horrors in space, where not all the monsters are inhuman. I enjoyed this enormously." (Peter McLean, author of Priest of Bones)

For two years in deep space, the freighter Demeter and a small crew have collected botanical life from other planets. It's a lesson in patience and hell. Mechanics Ensign Raina is ready to jump ship, if only because her abusive ex is also aboard, as well as her overbearing boss. It's only after a foreign biological creature sneaks aboard and wreaks havoc on the ship and crew that Raina must find her grit - and maybe create a gadget or two - to survive...that is, if the crew members don't lose their sanity and turn on each other in the process.

Contains mature themes.

Ms. McFadden sounds like a "Valley Girl" from the 1980s. The plot wasn't all that bad. The main female character was annoying, stupid and pathetic. The main male character was an abusive butthead. I won't be listening to anything else narrated by Amy McFadden. I might listen to another book by Anne Tibbets, maybe.

Terrible Narrator

Hours of painful back and forth between a domineering, sociopathic man and a dumb woman with an inferiority complex. There is an "alien on board" subplot. The narrator is good.

For codependent relationship fans

This is my favorite kind of writing. You're thrown head first into a fast moving plot as you're introduced to the cast of characters and the world building and back stories are teased out as they relate to the plot in motion.

Definitely a good, quick, read for fans of space horror like Alien.

Enjoyable

To the reviewers that state the lead female is pathetic, you obviously have never experienced long term psychological and or physical abuse/gaslighting from someone you love. As a survivor myself, I found this to be an accurate depiction of a woman coming to terms with the abuses she has endured, while finding her inner strength to overcome anything thrown her way.
This was an enjoyable read, and felt more authentic as a space horror than some others I've come across. It contained the realistic shortcomings of people who don't expect or plan for worst case scenarios, and the consequences of such.
if you are also a survivor of abuse, proceed with caution, as there are many parts you may find triggering if you are not advanced in your healing journey.

Authentic depiction of abuse and space terror
