About this listen

Jack is an artist living in the squalor of London's East End. He wants a quiet life, keeping to himself as much as is possible, spending time only with his best friend. That all changes when Mary comes along. She decides that Jack will be the one to free her from her desolate life. Whether he wants to participate or not.

Soon Jack is immersed in murder, chaos, and accusations he cannot hide from. His best friend has left the city for good, he is being blamed for all the bad things happening, and someone is stalking him.

Amidst jealousy, love, and unimaginable, misunderstood circumstances Jack must try to protect his name and keep himself out of prison. As he desperately tries he finds himself haunted by a question. Was what he did really a crime?

I had not expected much when I picked up the audiobook. I guess Jack the Ripper intrigued me the most because I can’t help but wonder what modern day forensics and procedure would have told us, had those scenes been treated differently.
So I’ve read a lot of books and enjoyed various spins and re-tellings. I didn’t care if the stories were close to truth or used the historical setting for a different tale.
This was written with heart and depth. It was refreshing and by far the best. I liked the setting, the characters, the creativity, the world building, the motivations and the intricate threads weaving them all together!
An ingenious tale that clutches you with its sound, authentic writing and the driving spirits of the characters as mysterious deaths are mounting up!

I’m looking forward to lengthier works by C J Roberston to convert to audio and would happily listen to more from Paul Jenkins!

Recommended for historical mystery suspense thrillers who enjoy a shorter book once in a while!
