About this listen

Following the success of his number one New York Times best seller Make Your Bed, which has sold more than one million copies, Admiral William H. McRaven is back with amazing stories of bravery and heroism from his career as a Navy SEAL and commander of America's Special Operations Forces.

Admiral William H. McRaven is a part of American military history, having been involved in some of the most famous missions in recent memory, including the capture of Saddam Hussein, the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips, and the raid to kill Osama bin Laden.

Sea Stories begins in 1963 at a French officers' club in France, where Allied officers and their wives gathered to have drinks and tell stories about their adventures during World War II - the place where a young Bill McRaven learned the value of a good story. Sea Stories is an unforgettable look back on one man's incredible life, from childhood days sneaking into high-security nuclear sites to a day job of hunting terrorists and rescuing hostages.

Action-packed, humorous, and full of valuable life lessons like those exemplified in McRaven's best-selling book Make Your Bed, Sea Stories is a remarkable memoir from one of America's most accomplished leaders.

Critic reviews

"McRaven...has taken the genesis of what he learned during SEAL training and his nearly four decades in Navy Special Operations into a thin, powerful book." (USA Today)

"Engaging...Sea Stories is more than an autobiography, more than a narrative of recent military history, and more than the sum of one remarkable man's experiences. In his excellently flowing prose...McRaven not only allows readers the opportunity to vicariously experience daring adventures and the command of elite warriors heading into harm's way, he also shares practical everyday wisdom." (Booklist, starred review)

"Sea Stories, a well-written book that reads like a thriller, covers some of the most important historical actions taken by Navy SEALs and other special operators." (The Washington Times)

An outstanding book and even better that the narration is done by Admiral McRaven himself and not some jabroni who is a pain to listen to. Amazing story of a life of service to country. Bravo sir! Thank you for your service.

Absolutely fantastic

Metaphorically speaking-- I could not begin to put this book down. I listened to 'Sea Stories', in one sitting. I've read thousands of books in my 60 plus years, and I would put this 'read' easily in my top five.

I'm Overboard for This Book.

Admiral McRaven is an amazing story teller and the stories are just as amazing. One of the best audio books I’ve ever listened to.

So I am a regular accountant, mother of two kids who I tries to show them American values and honors at its best. Admiral McRaven is one of our best examples of decency and seizing the day. Now, I have two BIG problems. BIG. The first one is that in naming the seal that shot Bin Laden (O’Neil) I think not only damages the image me and my son, at least, had of the secrecy and camaraderie of the seals, but also cheapen the status as well. It minimize the effort and capacity of the other seals, for example the one who jumped towards those potential suicide bombers women and children to protect the rest of his team. We don’t know his name, and for me that is the seal hero that represents the essence of all the seals (with the exception of the lucrative ones). Lastly, Admiral, stay FAAAAAR of guiding, advice, suggest ANYTHING, that has to do with women relationships. I ache for the woman in the west coast ship who become a serious relationship when you were also dating Mrs Georgiana. She probably know who she is and to hear that she was more of a one year of a 21 year old guy option, against your college fellow who was more a lifetime option, even for Mrs Georgiana should have felt kinda weird. Like what? The ship one was more hot? Sir, stick to you navy tactics, and amazing descriptions of patriotism. Let women “locker room chat”, aside. AND if you have a moment, write a note to the poor broken heart on that West cosat boat. I am sure that if she looked at you, she is worth a sorry or two.

Navy Seal Yes. Romeo No.

This is amazing. This is a well written, well read and extremely interesting autobiographical account of what it is like to serve your country with honor, distinction and well placed humor.

I had not even heard of Admiral McLaren until I saw a video of his speech about 10 lessons learned from SEAL training. This is a wonderful collection of very meaningful stories selected from the thousands that I am sure he could tell. the author leads us through his career with vivid and well told stories that enlighten us about military life, military operations, political intrigue, inter- agency dynamics and so much more. I found almost unfathomable that one man led the raid to capture Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden and to free Captain Phillips, but he did.

I loved every story. Having the author read it allowed a totally authentic voice to envelop all the stories. He is an unabashed cheerleader for our men and women in uniform, but his credentials give credence to the cheers.

Tremendous collection of stories
