About this listen

The company chairman lay on the cold ground of the woods, his eyes unseeing, his orange hunting jacket punctured by a rifle bullet at close range. Around him stood the four executives with whom he had been hunting, each with his or her own complicated agenda, each with a reason not to be sorrowful about the man's death.

There were currents running through this group, hints and whispers of something much greater than the murder of a single man. Lucas Davenport had felt this way not long before, sensed the curling of an indefinable evil, and not only had it nearly gotten him killed, it had lost him his fiance, who'd never been able to recover from the violence of the encounter. Sometime soon, unless he could stop it, there would be another death, and then still another, and Davenport couldn't help but wonder if maybe this time, the final death might not be his own.

Please note: This is the abridged edition. An unabridged version is also available.

Critic reviews

"Full of smart suspense and deduction as well as explosive action." (Publishers Weekly)

"A good plot, a great villain, and a realistic, flawed hero, combined with a great reading by Lang, all make this a very entertaining 'listen.'" (Library Journal)

"Sandford has sustained his Prey thrillers by varying the premise with imaginative plotting; shifting points of view; a subtle, melancholy protagonist; and most of all, great villains. The ninth Prey novel may well be the best, and that's high praise in the context of such a consistently entertaining body of work." (Booklist)

I love John Sandfords Prey Series. These books are captivating, exciting, and well written. This is one of my favorites in the series.

Fantastic!

I’ve read at least 15 Sandford books and this one was BORING. The narrator sounds like someone who shouted narrating a fashion magazine not a cop mystery. Skip this one

The narrators terrible

I didn't like the way the readers performance..he makes it sound like everyone is 70 years old

Great prey story

I have to get used to voice of the narrator, but otherwise he was great.

The story is great because it touches on how illogical people believe they are logical. Their craziness makes sense as they do not know they are crazy. Abuse, victimization, murder, vengeance, psychosis... wrapped into one person. This could actually happen.

The usual attention gripping story

Get this one (or any of the Prey books) they are great stories. If you have law enforcement background the banter is spot on.

Always entertaining

only because this one was so short and i didn't prefer the narrator. the reader was rushed and didn't match the old character voices at all. this book was half the length if the others. the story was good but not very deep development if side stories.

short and rushed

I could live without all the musical interludes between chapters. I found them a little creepy otherwise it was not bad I like John Sandford

The narrator is not as good as the prior narrator. The audio never really captured my imagination. The length of the book was also a lot shorter. The story was good, but the detail was less leading to a shorter version.

The narrator is not as good as the prior books.
