About this listen

The company chairman lay on the cold ground of the woods, his eyes unseeing, his orange hunting jacket punctured by a rifle bullet at close range. Around him stood the four executives with whom he had been hunting, each with his or her own complicated agenda, each with a reason not to be sorrowful about the man's death. If he read it in a book, Lucas Davenport thought, it would seem like one of those classic murder mysteries, the kind where the detective gathers everyone together at the end and solves the case with a little speech.

But it wasn't going to be that easy, he knew. There were currents running through this group, hints and whispers of something much greater than the murder of a single man. He had felt this way not long before, sensed the curling of an indefinable evil, and not only had it nearly gotten him killed, it had lost him his fiancee, who'd never been able to recover from the violence of the encounter. Sometime soon, unless he could stop it, there would be another death, and then still another, and Davenport couldn't help but wonder if maybe this time, the final death might not be his own....

John Sandford has written extraordinary thrillers before, but nothing to top the startling twists and unrelenting suspense of Secret Prey.

Classic Sanforfd

Classic Sandford: great plot, fast paced, interesting characters, demented villain, funny, and laced with sex.

Murder? Who You Gonna Call? Lucas D.... Of Course

Who do you trust? No one, especially while on a hunting trip with a group of "friends". Everybody has guns and everybody has something to gain by the death of the Chairman, somebody pulls the trigger killing the "top man" and nobody is sorry that he's dead.... wow! a murder mystery for Lucas Davenport to solve.

This is where the skills and intuition of Lucas Davenport steps in to solve the case. But it was not going to be easy because the same people who are supposed to be the man's friends contains at least one man or woman who was willing to pull the trigger, and would benefit from the man's death. There are twists and turns in the storyline that keeps the story interesting and the listener guessing whodunit.

Ferrone, the narrator, is the voice of Lucas Davenport. An enjoyable listen.

Twisted in all the right ways.

Davenport shows some vulnerability as he nearly meets his match in this one! Excellently performed.

Another great story from John Sandford

I was sceptical when started reading, but as the story developed the tension began. Great book on the Lucas Davenport series, just think the last chapter was not necessary for the closing of the book, though

Like Lucas Davenport? Buy This Book!

Another tight Sanford plot littered with gritty characters and Sanford's talent. Richard Ferrone's keeps this cast clearly distinct from one another without intruding any idiosyncratic debris into the drama.

If you want a good mystery read that's read good... Get Secret Prey.

I can't seem to get enough of this series.

After several of these books I thought I'd try something else but the whole time I was wondering what was going on in the next Prey series. I'm hooked. Glad the narrator never changes from book to book too.

Twisting plot

Very good story this time. Lots of suspects. The opium grannies added some enjoyable humor.
