Publisher's summary

A cryptic murder pulls a former soldier turned financial analyst deep into the corruption and menace that prowl beneath the opulent world of finance, in #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci’s new thriller.

Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city’s most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine’s tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead.

Sara Ewes, Devine’s coworker and former girlfriend, has been found hanging in a storage room of his office building—presumably a suicide, at least for now—prompting the NYPD to come calling on him. If that wasn’t enough, before the day is out, Devine receives another ominous visit, a confrontation that threatens to dredge up grim secrets from his past in the army unless he participates in a clandestine investigation into his firm. This treacherous role will take him from the impossibly glittering lives he once saw only through a train window, to the darkest corners of the country’s economic halls of power . . . where something rotten lurks. And apart from this high-stakes conspiracy, there’s a killer out there with their own agenda, and Devine is the bull’s-eye.

Loved everything but the female narrator

The book kept me guessing until the end….but no matter how I tried, I could only get the female narrator to fit ONE of the people she read for????

best book so far this summer!

I usually have figured out the bad guy long before the end. Somethings I figured out others came as a complete surprise. I love how his heros are not perfect. I really enjoyed this book. most of the books I have tried this summer I gave up on before the end. I hope this becomes a series

Paranoia Meets Jack Reacher

As I was listening to this book, I was trying to remember from my extensive Audible Library which book this reminded me of. Corporate espionage combined with Army military and fighting skills and riding to work on the same train at the same time every day. Then it hit me! This book is part Paranoia, written by Joseph Finder and later turned into a movie with Harrison Ford, blended with the calculated and advanced military fighting skills of former Army military police, Jack Reacher. And throw in a bit of The Girl on the Train on the side. This interesting combination made Travis Devine a more complex character than most corporate espionage reads, and the cast of characters around him I found interesting. If you like any of the books or characters in those books that I mentioned, this may be a title for you to explore.

Another Baldacci thriller

Very good book. Very interesting new lead character that will sure ensure many sequels. The readers were excellent. Glad they had a woman read the female parts so much better than only one person reading the entire book. Baldacci is a master and can’t wait for the next in the series.

Thrilling!

Provocative story. I bels all the characters; although there is much more for the main character to reveal. Very well narrated.
