About this listen

"Vividly written... Their story is thrilling - the kind of tale that wild-animal lovers won't easily forget." (People)

In this riveting real-life adventure, Mark and Delia Owens tell the dramatic story of their last years in Africa, fighting to save elephants, villagers, and - in the end - themselves. The award-winning zoologists and pioneering conservationists describe their work in the remote and ruggedly beautiful Luangwa Valley, in northeastern Zambia. There they studied the mysteries of the elephant population’s recovery after poaching, discovering remarkable similarities between humans and elephants. A young elephant named Gift provided the clue to help them crack the animals’ secret of survival. A stirring portrait of life in Africa, Secrets of the Savanna is a remarkable record of the Owenses's unique passions.

A vivid view of the savanna in Africa, culture and wildlife!

I had read one of Delia Owens other books and was searching for other book that she wrote. At first when I saw the title over I don't know Africa? But I am so happy that I did listen to this great book! And I probably will again the description of the wildlife the elephants in their lives will for ever touched my heart. As a youngster I lived in many continents and I so always wanted to go to Africa Kenya I thought because of all the animals you would see in one country. But sadly I've never made that journey. So it's so exciting at 72 to have a treasure i'm listening to your , Love and dedication and many years giving your lives to save the wonderful Savannah!

A refreshing book that reconnects us with nature

This book tells a story of an amazing couple who live a good deal of their lives among the animals and natives of Africa. The work they did in Africa benefited both the people of Africa and the animals of Africa. The writers also give the readers a feel for what it must be like to live among such amazing natives and animals.

Audible vs Book

I had read Cry of the Kalahari and was looking forward to this book by the Owens. However, I believe I would have become more absorbed in the book itself. Nevertheless I still enjoyed the story. The only other thing I would say is I know the Owens were young people when they started their research but your male narrator sounded like an old man who was simply reading using a monotone voice with no inflection. That was disconcerting and not keeping with the picture I have of a young and excited Mark Owens living the best of his life.

Another 5 Star book by Mark & Delia Owens

Love this, as well as their 2 prior books about their lives and experiences as wildlife reseach scientists and conservationists in Africa. I can't single out just one memorable moment, there have been so many of them in all their books. Unexpected situations that strike fear, dismay and laughter are all written in compelling prose. The more I have read, the more my admiration grows for Mark and Delia Owens. If you haven't read their other books yet, I highly recommend, in order of publication, Cry of the Kalahari and The Eye of the Elephant. Delia Owens also wrote a book of fiction (excellently written story, made into a movie), Where the Crawdads Sing.
