About this listen

This is Austen's first published novel, from 1851, which she wrote under the pseudonym "A Lady". The story is about Elinor and Marianne, two daughters of Mr. Dashwood by his second wife. They have a younger sister, Margaret, and an older half-brother named John. When their father dies, the family estate passes to John, and the Dashwood women are left in reduced circumstances.

The novel follows the Dashwood sisters to their new home, a cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience both romance and heartbreak. The contrast between the sister's characters is eventually resolved as they each find love and lasting happiness. Through the events in the novel, Elinor and Marianne encounter the sense and sensibility of life and love.

The narrators voice sounds computerized and is distracting and the story is just okay. I would recommend Pride & Prejudice before this because it is so much better

If you could sum up Sense and Sensibility in three words, what would they be?

People are different

Who was your favorite character and why?

Elinor, because she has both sense and sensibility.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Victoria McGee?

I don't think so.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Marianne almost died.

monotonous narration

I never thought I'd find myself listening or reading a Jane Austen book, much less reviewing one. On the insistence of my dance teacher and my grandma however I found myself purchasing it. I always thought that Jane Austen would be very boring. I was wrong. This book was very lovely, and interesting. Unfortunately the narration is a little faulty and repeats itself in some places. Also a large section of the book is missing in chapter 43. I had to borrow my grandma's copy of the book and read it, especially since the part of the book missing is rather key to the plot. I recommend the book but perhaps you might want to find a different narration.

Surprisingly Enjoyable

Sense and Sensibility is a book I’ve read many times and always enjoy. I downloaded it to my kindle and was offered this Audible copy of it for only $0.99. I know it’s tempting to say, “well, you get what you pay for”, but that isn’t always the case, as those of you who do both ebook and audible know.

This particular narrator, Victoria McGee, did not do very well at all. Her delivery was rather monotoned, she mispronounced words, and rarely tried to differentiate between character voices (or if she did I couldn’t tell).

Therefore, even though it’s almost free when purchased with the kindle ebook, if I had it to do over, I wouldn’t do it again.

Great book! Bad performance!

This narrator has such a bland, unvarying voice that it could almost be computer generated.

Lines are repeated several times.

The silent spaces between chapters are sometimes exceedingly long and sometimes short.

I just heard a swallow.

I’m pretty disappointed.

If I were a more frivolous person, I’d buy one with a different narrator.

Sense and Sensibility is a classic, this reading of it is not well produced, seems like it was slapped together: there are missing passages and there are several parts where the narrator stops in the middle of a sentence and restarts, which is not her fault, obviously the editors were supposed to fix it. She also mistakenly pronounces words and names a few times which, again, could have been fixed.

Would you try another book from Jane Austen and/or Victoria McGee?

I like Jane Austin, but the narrator made it difficult.

What other book might you compare Sense and Sensibility to and why?

any other Jane Austin book

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She had excellent diction, but it didn't seem like she actually understood what she was reading.

This book did not disappoint. I love Jane Austin. The performance was great for the price ... I would recommend for a sale, but not a credit!

Another JA favorite of mine!!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I find this book not too bad, on the overall, although I prefer many other books of the era over the this one.

What didn’t you like about Victoria McGee’s performance?

But this recording is HORRIBLE! I had to buy a different version so as not to spoil the act of reading and listening. I am convinced this recording is computerized as there is no emotion in the voice of the reader. I went to check other samples of the same reader to check if she was as bad on other recordings, but it turned out that all the other samples I listened to had more warmth and emotion in the voice.

Audible.com MUST warn the customers when they are buying books read by computerized voices, that's only fair and honest. I'm sure that many customers would have decided to spend a little more to have a real narrator read the story!

Audible.com, you made me WASTE my MONEY!

Horrible recording
