About this listen

Welcome to the age of un-innocence. Enter a world where the sometimes shocking and often hilarious mating habits of the privileged are exposed by a true insider. The collection that launched the series that became a phenomenon, now, 10 years later, comes back in an anniversary edition.

In essays drawn from her witty and sometimes brutally candid column in the New York Observer, Candace Bushnell introduces us to the young and beautiful who travel in packs from parties to bars to clubs.

Meet "Carrie", the quintessential young writer looking for love in all the wrong places; "Mr. Big", the business tycoon who drifts from one relationship to another; "Samantha Jones", the 40-ish, successful, "testosterone woman" who uses sex like a man; not to mention "Psycho Moms", "Bicycle Boys", "International Crazy Girls", and the rest of the New Yorkers who inspired one of the most watched TV series of our time. You've seen them on HBO, now listen to the book that started it all.

If you're a big fan of the TV series, you won't want to miss the Sex and the City Writers' Special from Un-Cabaret.©1996 Candace Bushnell. All rights reserved (P)2006 Hachette Audio. All rights reserved.

"Fascinating...hilarious....Welcome to the cruel planet that is Manhattan." (Los Angeles Times)

Featured Article: Sex and the City Character Guide

Sex and the City is an essay collection by Candace Bushnell that forever changed the cultural conversation about womanhood, relationships, and, yes, sex. Bushnell created the column "Sex and the City" for The New York Observer in 1994, and framed it as a humorous take on dating in Manhattan based on her own experiences. If that sounds familiar, you’re on the right track. Yes, it was exactly like the column Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw wrote on the hit television show Sex and the City, which made its dazzling entrance on HBO in 1998 and still hasn't left the pop culture scene.

i enjoyed this book.

i enjoyed this book and while i didn't think it was for everyone, i thought it was an intelligent look at how the women portrayed in this book were actually representatives of myself and other women i know.

Loved it like the show…

Cynthia Nixon deserved more recognition for this performance. I liked the story a lot and will be striving to listen to more by Ms. Bushnell.

Can you call it a story?

I am a fan of the show and movies. Listened to the book after. I don't know .... I see the characters from the book ... The inspiration. Loved Cynthia as narrator!

Not what I expected

The narration was good and a familiar voice from the series was pleasant to hear. However, I was expecting it to be closer to the series - it wasn't. I didn't find it very exciting or engaging. Perhaps if I heard this without seeing the series first, I may have had a different review.

If you’re a fan of the show, you’ll enjoy this audiobook.

Don’t know if I would have felt the same way if I would’ve just read it. Cynthia Nixon does a fantastic job of reading this book and using her time on the show as a solid foundation while still make it it her own.

Liked it, but didn’t love it.

I think that Cynthia Nixon was the best part of the Audiobook. I think I was hoping for a little more meat to the story.

Wish an Un-Abridged version was available on audible

Loved this book. Wish I could have listened to the unabridged version however. If you're a fan of the show you'll like the book.
