Publisher's summary

Here is one of those rare novels, the first in an epic series, that completely transports the listener to an unforgettable time and place in history. At Talavera in July of 1809, Captain Richard Sharpe, bold, professional, and ruthless, prepares to lead his men against the armies of Napoleon into what will be the bloodiest battle of the war. Sharpe has earned his captaincy, but there are others, such as the foppish Lieutenant Gibbons and his uncle, Colonel Henry Simmerson, who have bought their commissions despite their incompetence. After their cowardly loss of the regiment's colors, their resentment toward the upstart Sharpe turns to treachery, and Sharpe must battle his way through sword fights and bloody warfare to redeem the honor of his regiment.

The fast pace of the story get me interested in intrigued

Nothing everything was very well done I wish more riders in readers could do as well as the disguise did

Engrossing!

This was a great story. It was superbly written with plenty of action, but also with great context, background and a description of the time and place that made me feel I was there. It was genuinely hard to stop listening, and after my long commute I often found myself wishing I was not yet at my destination. The reading was outstanding.

One of the best Sharpe Books

This is classic Sharpe. He is still learning to be an officer but has the respect of his men and now is attached to a regiment. He saves a colour and captures an eagle. This books explains nicely how tactics and battles are fort. Frederick Davidson does an excellent job with narrating it but I have to admit I don't like his Harper's voice. Simonset is annoying but in character. Bernard Cornewell did very well with this book and sets you up nicely to fall in love with the entire series.

Great concept, great book, same Sharpe

I like the Sharpe books a lot but it always bothers me to no end how every single book, which I understand needs at least 1 antagonist, is always filled with haters that are suppose to be 'his side' fighting the french... in most wars u would NEVER find a NCO's advice & honor tread on like Sharpe is, plus after his accomplishments. It seems I'm always waiting for him to take revenge on a fellow soldier more than an enemy he can hate but respect, which in some books is the entire point. BUT With all craziness of buying ur own army & having the audacity to blame others for problems anyone present could easily see was not an underlings fault plus having family & the always faithful moron following this person I'm surprised anyone won these wars with the thinking these books put forth.

But like I've said to other people who read historical fictions... in the end, its FICTION, so I don't try to make too many complaints especially when the narrator does a great job, the book has feuds that turn into blood feuds, & all this going on while he keeps an 'impossible' promise to a friend. It was also interesting to hear the actual historical data relayed at the end of the book in regards to what happened during the book as well

Highly recommend this book if u are picking & choosing through the over 20 some Sharpe books or if ur a fanatic u won't be disappointed

Sharpe's Eagle- Great Listening Experience

I purchased this book as a first attempt at historical fiction. I found it difficult to find a good place to stop listening. I enjoy historical fiction and this one contains enough historical detail to keep it interesting just from that point of view. In addition, it has a very compelling plot and enough interesting characters to keep the listener engaged through out the telling of this story. I would recommend listening to this series in order if possible. The first available is Sharpe's Rifles. Start there and see what you think.

Decent

The fade ins are too late. Missing the first word in most sentences and more in some

Great and you don't have to have read the others

One of the wonderful features of the Sharp's novel is that any one is a stand alone. Cornwell writes the best historical fiction around. Not only does he include lots of backround but he is a master of creating swashbuckling characters and great situations.

The rendition of the book was excellent, the characters were 100% in place and believable.

Rent any of the Sharp's books and you won't be dissapointed!

Always a great listen

Any Sharpes novel can be listened to in any order. That’s what Cornwell does so great with Richard Sharpe. The reader does a great job also and keeps me entertained with all his readings.
