Beautifully read. Enjoyable stories

Classic stories read by the very best actors and narrators.
Remember you can slow down or speed up the narration.
The voices are familiar and as such, feel like old friends. A joy if you enjoy
Anthologies, 19th century settings and a little whimsical prose.

Amazing stories read by excellent narrators

This book was unknown to me, but I do enjoy short stories, and because it was free, I gave it a go. Imagine my surprise when every story was exquisite read by superb narrators. The last story was “a patch on the quilt” by Sapper. It was read by Edward Fox. I don’t think I drew a breath through the whole performance. Fox’s reading was mesmerizing. This book was so great it made me wish I could pay for it!

Good stories, but . . .

I hate abridgments. They drive me crazy because they so often change the piece in question. The shorter the piece, the more valuable any small portion will be. I buy unabridged books and collections so that I can read or listen to the unabridged stories.

These short stories aren't the type of story I would normally choose for entertainment, but it's always good to expand one's palette from time to time. "On Being in Love" by Jerome K Jerome was interesting enough to me that I wanted to pull a quote from it for future reference.

Imagine my surprise, then, to find that the version performed in this unabridged recording had been very much abridged. This makes me question the integrity of the other stories as well. Does their 'unabridged' state allow for words to be changed, clauses to be removed, and whole paragraphs excised while remaining 'unabridged'?

If you're looking for a handful of good old short stories, this will suffice. If you're looking to get the authentic experience of the stories or of the time period, look elsewhere. Where one piece has been modified, none can be trusted.

cracking stories, but no table of contents!

I am surprised to find there is no table of contents or means of navigation. Surely this should easily be possible?

Spectacular Series

Love all these collections. Great performances, good selections of stories that aren't basic tenets of high school that will call up bad memories. Very diverse and entertaining. Been listening to them while hiking on low volume so the bears don't get me. They have greatly improved tedious long trails. Also great just sitting in an armchair.

so so

Would you try another book from the authors and/or the narrators?

No... sometimes I could barely even hear them. One of them talked so fast I couldn't understand him.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I never knew what the next story would be about. One seemed like an essay on being old and sour about love. I'm not sure it was even a story. The first story was the best one, then it was all down hill.

What three words best describe the narrators’s performance?

not the best

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

sure but it's a lot easier to watch a movie than sit through a whole book.

Any additional comments?

This wasn't a good selection of stories or narrators in my opinion.

Hard Listen

This is a collection of stories that have no appeal to my tastes. I found them dull and uninteresting. I only made it through 2 1/2 stories before giving up. Wish I could return it.

Just ok

Although the authors are notable, the choices of their stories coupled with the narrators weren't to my taste. After skipping a couple of the stories and finding no change in my feeling towards it, I finally returned it with out finishing.
