About this listen

Billy is an excellent killer: strategic, methodical, ritualistic. If only he knew what his victims looked like.

Plagued with a rare disease that prevents him from recognizing faces, Billy carries a photograph in his pocket that is his only way of identifying his next target. Killing is in Billy's bloodline as a member of Philadelphia's dangerous Farren crime family.

While Billy stalks Philadelphia, Detective Kevin Byrne is assigned to a series of bizarre home-invasion cases and is joined by his former partner turned assistant district attorney, Jessica Balzano. Their investigations circle Byrne's childhood neighborhood of Devil's Pocket, and they find themselves revisiting a crime from Byrne's past that has haunted him for decades. What Byrne witnessed as a child in Devil's Pocket jeopardizes the Farren family - which makes him the next target on Billy's hit list.

A multigenerational story of hardship, guilt, and redemption, Shutter Man is Byrne and Balzano's most tense and personal case to date.

Kind of a rambling and convoluted story. It could have been a tighter story without all the deep dives into the characters psyches; just too much at times and it became dull.

Meh.

It was an ok read, but only ok, and have come to expect much more from a Burn Balzano book... The plot line was a bit meandering and higglety-pigglety... The different arcs making up the whole weren't very tight... The action is pretty decent, but suffers from some stop and start pacing... On a personal note, legal blindness is quite different from actual blindness and it's apparent the author doesn't understand the difference... The narration is excellent, and the ending saves what would have otherwise been a below average read... Unsure it's worth the credit or not, but it's not worth a return...

Excellent book, twists and turns kept me guessing all the way. I love his books
Scott Brick is THE BEST and made the book all the more enjoyable.
This combination is a winning team

Fantastic!

This was very good especially with Scott Brick narrating. This is not the best storyline in the series, but Mr. Montanari never disappoints.

Great Series

Richard Montanari has brought to life the characters we've come to love with the help of a flawless performance by narrator Scott Brick. The story, however falls a bit flat, thus 4 stars. The story is dark and fails to have an engaging plot line. The story flashes back in time and seems to have very little to do with what is going on in the present. This book is well worth a listen, but not the author's best of the series .

Compelling Characters

not what I expected. The first few chapters are a little confusing but it just gets better and better . One of the few books I have read that completely surprised me. Well worth reading.

Very surprising!

Another perfect performance. Scott makes every story so much more " listenable ". Enjoyed the book immensely.

Shutter Man is an okay book, but I won't buy the matching hardcover or paperback this time.

It's okay.

I suspect this is less an issue with the print version, but between skipping from character to character and back and forth in time, I felt frustrated for at least the first third of the book and stopped listening several times. I enjoy Scott Brick's narration. I have also found the author's previous books to be satisfying, so I kept at it. Not one you want to listen to when your attention is divided.

Difficult to get engaged, but satisfying ending.

I've read and listened to a few books in the series and love every one. I particularly love listening to Scott Brick narrate. He brings the stories to life. I'm seriously considering him to read my book. Can't wait to see what ride Montanari will take on next.

Another great story in the series
