Publisher's summary

For fans of Stephen King, Blake Crouch, and Michael Crichton comes a new, heart-pounding thriller by Brett Battles.

Daniel Ash wakes after midnight to the cry of his daughter. Just a bad dream, he thinks. She's had them before. Yet he can't help but worry when she cries out again as he pads down the hallway. Stepping through her doorway, he expects to find her sitting up in bed, frightened by a nightmare. But the nightmare is his. It's real. And it's just beginning....

Something is burning Ash's daughter alive. Something horrible that is spreading beyond the walls of their home, and taking no prisoners. Thirty seconds later, Ash will discover his daughter isn't the only one in his family infected, and as his world spins, coming apart at the seams, a team of armed men in biohazard suits bursts into his house. But these aren't the good guys. They haven't come to save Ash's family. They've come to separate them, to finish what they started. The problem is, Ash refuses to disappear. He wants only one thing: to find those responsible. Because humanity is on the brink of execution. And man is pulling the trigger.

Critic reviews

"Like a fever, Sick makes you sweat and keeps you up all night, wondering what the hell is happening. It'll make your heart race like someone shot you with an EpiPen. You think Battles was badass before? He just cranked it up to 500 joules. CLEAR!" (popculturenerd.com)

Whiney hero, over and over.

What made the experience of listening to Sick the most enjoyable?

Most enjoyable? Could play it to go to sleep.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Edge of my seat? Such a phrase!. Pretty good plot, though.

What three words best describe Macleod Andrews’s performance?

He did it,

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I got so tired of the hero whining like a spoiled child to his rescuers I had to quit.

Any additional comments?

It was okay

It was an okay story it was a bit slow and dragging for my taste. No real bang just a calm story.

Battles is a master!

Love the entire Jonathan Quinn series, now hooked on the Project Eden series. If Battles continues to deliver, he has a fan no matter what he writes!

OK series introduction but poor character work.

It was clear to me that this book was basically the first chapter in a larger story and I liked that he chose the hero's quest to rescue his children as the central thread. Im generally a fan of Brett Battles' writing, but he had a few characters behaving a little too naively for a book published in the 21st century. There were quite a few instances where characters argued that "big brother" couldn't possibly do something evil (in one instance it was a character that already had evidence to the contrary.) These moments were so bizarre that I was kicked out of the story. I'm not used to being kicked out of a Battles book.

I thought this book was a good kick off to the series, but I don't think it grabbed me enough to guarantee that I'll be reading the other books in the series. I think the major reason for my hesitation is that nothing in this story's setup made me feel the need to get the next book before the stop button has had time to cool off. None of the characters grabbed me that strongly either. The nameless/faceless bad guys were too nonexistent, in terms of characterization, for me to be anxious to find out more. Just not Battles best character work for me.

I did thoroughly enjoyed MacLeod Andrews' performance. He's better at female voices than a number of other male readers.

Well done

I don't like short books in a long series I can tell this Is where the writer is going with this book. That's the only reason I gave it 4 stars. Great concept it should have been written in epic novel form. The reason books like the stand by Stephen king or swan song by Robert McCammon did so well was because they were written that way. If they were all long books with a lasting story and great character development I would given this book 5 stars. If I had something bad to say It would be I didn't totally fall in love with the characters but that could grow as the series continues

Good book

Good book to spend your time. The story isn't bad but it's nothing new. The narrator was good but struggled too much trying to do the female voices.

decent story with believable characters

I enjoyed this first book by a talented author. I think the editing could have been a little bit better. Author has a tendency to tell us what we, the readers, already know. A good editor would catch that. None-the-less a good story worth my time and very good performance. I will continue in the series. As the series progresses the author will improve.

Another great book by Battles

I enjoyed the book and did not want to stop listening, therefore it may deserve 5 stars; but, the premise was a little far fetched so I gave it 4. I recommend it.

The narrator did a brilliant job!

In a fast moving plot I felt the narrator of this audiobook did an amazing job in keeping the tone of the plot current.

World buiding is very realistic, the plot although not unique per se is presented well enough to entertain and that is what I want from my reading material, I want to be entertained.

If you like a good read, love this gemre? Then I can say with no doubt that this book, be it on audio or print, is an excellent choice!
