Echoes of a past tragedy haunt Veronica Kildare as she and her talented search and rescue and drug detection dog, Leda, are drawn into an investigation surrounding odd fish and wildlife deaths in the Colorado wilderness by her friend, Kimana, an award-winning freelance investigative reporter. The mystery surrounding this backcountry region only deepens when Leda discovers the body of a dead woman in the area under scrutiny and the district wildlife manager is targeted in a devious attack.

While Veronica also trains a conservation canine and a 911 call center therapy dog who are desperately needed as service animals, and searches for lost hikers in peril, her entire team is soon involved in trying to uncover the identity of the murder victim and the reason for her violent death. Veronica and Leda tenaciously follow the trail of the criminals who have brutally disrupted the serenity of the Repentant River, and it eventually becomes clear that the ominous events originate from more than one source and the villains have far-reaching national and international connections. Can Veronica and her team decipher the sources of the evil that have turned the wilderness deadly in time to prevent further tragedy?

For Readers Who Revel in Superb Storytelling with a Bonus Dose of Knowledge

“Sick as a Dog” by Tracy Carter is a standout in the Dogged Pursuit series, blending mystery and fascinating canine knowledge. As a dog lover and rescue volunteer, I was immediately drawn into the story, especially since the protagonist trains shelter dogs—an element that adds warmth and satisfaction to the plot.

The book’s appeal lies not only in its suspenseful and clever mystery but also in its emotional depth and the genuine learning it offers. Insights into not only dog behavior and animal welfare, but also into the current plot line as well, are woven seamlessly into the narrative enriching the story rather than distracting from it.

This novel stands apart for delivering both entertainment and enlightenment, making it a rare gem among mysteries. Whether you’re passionate about animals or simply enjoy a smart, heartfelt story, “Sick as a Dog” is a five-star read that will both engage and educate you. Highly recommended for readers seeking both excitement and substance.

In short, “Sick as a Dog” is a triumph—a five-star read that will linger in your mind long after the final page is turned. I feel like Veronica Kildare is my friend. I enjoy her adventures and her dogs. I credit that to the writing style of the author- I feel like I'm right there alongside Veronica and Leda- on their searches, eating dinner with her ad hoc family, solving crimes with her dad, and psychologically finding her way out of a deep depression to find a new life from the ashes of her old life. The training portions of the story are quite real and add depth to the relationship between dog and owner. The story line is also realistic and the narrator does a great job keeping the listener engaged the whole time. I found myself just sitting in my car and listening to the story, even after I reached my destination. The audiobook version of "I couldn’t put it down." Sick as A Dog is a great addition to my audiobook collection that I suspect I will listen to a few times, while I await the 4th book in the series.
