About this listen

From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Paper Magician Series comes the enthralling climax of a cataclysmic war between monstrous creatures.

Sandis has finally freed herself from her master and his plans to use her as a vessel for the ancient beast Kolosos. But her master has found a new, impossible vessel: Sandis’s brother, Anon - a brother she long thought dead.

Kolosos is ancient, massive, and seemingly unbeatable. Fortunately, Sandis has her own monster - an ethereal fire horse that she can summon at will. In addition, she and Rone may have discovered the secret to defeating Kolosos: ancient lore that details the creation of magic. It could be the key to victory and the key to saving Anon.

The price is steep, and Sandis is willing to pay it. Rone is not, and his attempt to save her only pulls them apart. As both are tested in ways they never expected, Sandis and Rone will need to determine the sacrifices they are willing to make. If their efforts are not enough, their city will fall...just as the ancient city beneath it already has.

Hard to listen to

The female voice talent on this one -and actually in the entire series has just grown more and more frenetic and hard to listen to. The storyline of the series is good although the second and third books felt like they could’ve been tightened up and it should have been a large single book. Maybe more money in the split. The male vocals were good, and I was relieved when it went to his parts, and the woman voice was great but her acting made me speed up the playback just to move through more quickly.

Must read first two novels in series prior to reading book 3

The fight to overcome the demon Kolosos is becoming more difficult as he is destroying churches and the town. There is conflict between the army, the city leaders, and Sandi’s and Rone. No one but “the vessels” really understand how to try to destroy the demon, and Sandis has only told Rone and other vessels that the demon is her brother Alon. Rone and Sandis become separated and we learn more of the Numina. Enjoyed the series

Great Conclusion to a Great Series

This picked up right where book 2 ended ... and I had this one ready to start the moment I finished book 2. I felt like this was a great conclusion to the series. It did finally explain a lot of the unanswered questions, about where the Numina had come from, where an ameranth came from. It pulled together the characters and their storylines in a way that left me content.

I'll remember this series fondly!

One audio note ... love the narrators, but did struggle a bit the entire time, as I have Lauren Ezzo SO entwined with "The Hundredth Queen" series in my head. It did improve in time as I connected to this story, but still, I'd flash back to the other series, because the voice was so familiar and this fantasy world wasn't completely contrary. Utter irony ... the male narrator, Scott Merriman, was ALSO a narrator for "The Hundredth Queen" but his voice hadn't stuck with me as much. It did sound familiar, but wasn't SO unique. However, it was unique enough, that when the few times the perspective changed (it was 3rd person, but with female narrator voicing when Sandis was the "main" and male narrator when we were more in Rone's head) away from the two main protagonists to other lesser characters (to Kazen, to Bastein, to She-Rig), they were still voiced by these two narrators. I would have appreciated NEW narrators, different voices. Although the text was telling who was "talking" now, it threw me a bit, because I was SO connected to the voices associated with our two main characters. Made the "voices" of the other characters seem the same too. I would have liked more of a distinction. I know that being 3rd person, there really isn't a need to switch narrators at all (even between the female/male) and that some readers might prefer the consistency to different voices. But I would have liked different voices for those few chapters ;)

Good Ending!

I loved the first book, barely made it through the second book and liked this book a lot. Scott’s performance was wonderful! But, Lauren’s performance was a tad over dramatic.

Epic

Incredible series! So many twists and a great conclusion to it! Much darker than Paper Magician series (which was awesome) and definitely not for the Disney crowd. Well written and performed!
