Critic reviews

"The mystery is an adroit blend of thick London atmosphere and a convincing cast, mingled with the complex and straitlaced conventions of Victorian England. A bonus is a totally surprising yet wonderfully plausible finale." (Publishers Weekly)

Less predictable and less repetitive than all the others - good intrigue and good twist at the end. And brilliantly narrated as usual by Davina Porter.

Best one so far

As always, Anne Perry is excellent. You almost think you've got it figured out and then you don't. Good view of life and society in the times, and as always with Perry, good thorough psychological portraits. Well plotted and enjoyable.

In fine form

I love this series and Davina Porter is absolutely fabulous.
My only issue is that there are a bunch of pauses missing throughout and it caused me more than once to go back because I thought I had accidentally hit the button to skip ahead.
The last word of chapter two and when she says “Chapter Three” practically overlap. Towards the end of the book I became used to it a little bit but it was still irksome, as I noticed about 15-20 instances where there should be a 1 second or more pause but the sound editing has put the words closer together than if they were two words in the same sentence.

I still highly recommend the book (the series, actually) but it was something that I only noticed with this recording that was not that way with the ones before.

Great story but the production has some issues

I hadn't the faintest idea who the mystery woman in pink was until the very end! fantastic as usual.

Stunned by the ending!

This is my favorite so far of the Thomas Pitt series. I loved the ending. I absolutely never saw it coming.

I think this is my very favorite so far. Investigation into an older death brings forth many questions and even Thomas finds himself in a bit of trouble. The ingenuity of the characters depth to act and gather information was truly brilliant.

Narration brought this excellent story alive and I could only sigh in relief at the end!

Excellent

For me, this was an 11 hour story that could’ve been told in 8 1/2 and I would’ve been totally satisfied. Each character went over the same ground of listing each suspect and why they might have done the deed. And then talking themselves out of that one and moving onto the next one. There were certainly some well written scenes, but not enough to offset the tedium.

A pretty good plot weakened by repetitive musings

Loved it! The sisters were extraordinary, Pitt hits a terrible low, dubious suspects aplenty! A standout saga in the Pitt series.

Exciting twisty plot, multiple suspects and Pitts
