About this listen

The year is 1941.

Shortly after the United States declares war on Japan in response to Pearl Harbor, Japan’s Tripartite Treaty allies, Germany and Italy, declare war on America.

The United States finds itself in a two-theater war.

President Franklin Roosevelt sets as America’s first priority the defeat of Nazi Germany, electing to wage a more-or-less holding war in the Pacific.

In the beginning, the only force opposing the Japanese onslaught in the Pacific is the U.S. Submarine Service.

Jake Lawler begins his war as executive officer aboard USS S-49, an aged S-class submarine, with orders to conduct unrestricted warfare against the enemy in the Pacific.

When a freak mid-sea grounding causes the loss S-49, Jake assumes command of another boat, USS Orca, a new Gato-class submarine, under construction in Groton, CT.

As Jake prepares a new boat and a freshly-assembled crew for war, the conflict in the Pacific is going badly for the Allies.

This is the story of Captain Lawler’s eleven war patrols, including an ongoing conflict with Imperial Japanese Navy Captain Hiriake Ito of the destroyer Atsukaze.

The crew of the Orca is made up of grizzled veterans and wet-behind-the-ears youngsters, all working together for a single purpose: to bring an implacable enemy to its knees.

Along the way, friendships are forged, and love affairs and marriages are created - and destroyed.

Pour yourself a favorite libation, grab a comfortable chair, and enjoy a tale that’s sure to hold your interest in Silent Warriors by Gene Masters.

Immersed in WWII

Felt like I lived through the war. Have read alot of WWII books. This is one of the more real and enjoyable.

Stick with it

I almost gave up after the first few chapters but I’m glad I stuck through it. I prefer first person stories. This read almost like a documentary. Still enjoyed the stories and insight it provided though.

Human Drama Including Submarines

This book involves the stories involving several people during world war II. The people are in one way or another associated with submarines. Instead of a book that provides tactics and events of submarine battles, this book provides the human drama back story. I enjoyed getting the perspectives encountered due to the fog of war. But then there were unnecessary stories including homosexuals and nurses.
I expect many people will thoroughly enjoy this book. But, per my ratings, I think it's just an average book. Although the sound bites from the '40s was a good addition.

A good story about submarine warfare in WWII

Enjoyed the store and in-depth detail of submarine ware fare in the Pacific during WWII. I found the narration to be excellent and added to the story line but the music, bugles and drum corps was a distraction to the point of being annoying and unnecessary.

excessive production efforts

good story. The author knows his subject and presents it well, he was totally let down by tweet productions. long periods of silence between chapters, the music that also was between chapters. It is a good listen when taken in small chunks.

Overall a Entertaining Listen

Very detailed attack descriptions. The Audio version was hampered by the belief that sound effects would enhance the story. Author was excellent while at Sea, but felt the need to "humanize" the war with "love" subplots. Not what I believe (my opinion of course) that individuals who read/listen to this genre of Submarine Adventure/History/Entertainment are looking for. Also, you would think that the boat was maned by 5 to 6 People. There is much more to a crew than the CO, XO one or two additional Officers and the COB. If you enjoy WWII Pacific Submarine novels, this novel is certainly worth a credit and your time.

One of the Best WW2 Audio Books !!

One of the Best WW2 Audio Books I have listened to, and I have listened to almost all of Audible's WW2 Submarine Stores. Its a mix of Submarine, land and air war fare from the point of view of a Submarine Commander. It is the best fiction ww2 book I have listened too, suburb narration mixed with sound effects made the 21 hr book go by fast.

If you are into WW2 historical fiction, this is a must read.

Please Gene, write some more ... I will buy every audio book you release !

Great Story, Well Presented

The story is excellent, it follows the exploits of the USS Orca, a WWII submarine, throughout the entire war in the Pacific. That said, the audible production is exceptional; the reader has a great and expressive voice, and added sound effects only add to the enjoyment of the narration. I would recommend this audio book to anyone who likes a great read.

New Appreciation For The Submarine Force

Thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and learned a lot from the historical and technical accounting. I’m not a fan of war themed stories but this was very good and I gained some sobering insight into what it takes to become a submariner. It truly is one of the military’s elite forces. The narration of the story on Audible was very enjoyable. I may listen a second time.
