Publisher's summary

Two legendary heroes, one incredible destiny.

Lost and cursed by treasure, Sinbad is racing to save his mother's realm from an advancing army of monsters. Agonized by his mistakes, Jason has taken the Argonauts on a seemingly impossible quest to alter the past. Their fateful paths cross on an island guarded by monstrous titans and warriors of rock and magma, where they find the secrets of a great crystalline temple are barred to even the greatest of "mere mortals." Forced to seek help, they set off together to confront the demigod Jason left behind: the mighty Heracles. Together the three might have some fighting chance of surviving the dangers ahead; that is assuming they don't kill each other first.

Dragon's Game Trilogy creator Kevin Candela blends two classic mythologies of literature and cinematic adventure into a single epic loaded with action, thrills, and laughs. Heavily inspired by the films of Ray Harryhausen, Sinbad and the Argonauts is laden from stem to stern with quirky characters, terrifying monstrosities, determined heroes and heroines, and the type of crazy interpersonal drama that could only come from the admittedly improbable meeting of bigger-than-life people with extraordinary talents.

So grab a spot on the rail, feel the breeze, and smell the salt air. And enjoy the sun while you can, because that's a storm on the horizon.

Harryhausen finds a home with Jason and Sinbad

As a kid the best movies to watch were the Harryhausen flicks, and since he worked on both Jason and the Argonauts and Sinbad movies, this is a natural meshing of the two. Candela brilliantly brings the titular heroes together in a mind blowing fashion, and manages to make the duo of Jason and Sinbad work together as well as you would expect they would get along. I have to say, that as I listened I kept picturing a lot of Harryhausen-styled monsters in my head. If you never saw his movies then you have missed out, and if they are too out of date for you, then you are just hurting yourself. Those old B-movies are fun and full of imagination; and this jewel of an audiobook captures the atmosphere and attitude of that era easily. Candela must have been a real fan to be able to take those old movies and craft a gem like this, and I do mean a gem. This story is brilliant and has a clarity like few others I have seen, and most of all it is just fun. Pure and simple, this is one of those movies brought to life.

First of all, I love the book cover. It looks like a movie poster, and really harkens back to that time. Sorry, I keep going back to that, but that is clearly what Candela was doing, he took a cherished childhood memory and gave it new life. He updated it, and resuscitated a genre that has been in a coma for quite some time. This poster, er, cover is like a revitalizing agent for the eyes.

The story, and I do not rehash details, is just what you'd expect. It is full of demi-gods, monsters, villains, and action, adventure, anger, laughter, swords, sorcery, and sailing. How can you go wrong with all of that? YOU CAN'T!!!! This is one of the most fun books I've read in a long time. It really carries the spirit those old films had, and it made me feel like a kid for the first time in a long while. The story is infectious, and I found myself sword fighting with my wife (not literally) out of the blue. So much fun is to be had inside that it is scary. Just get this book, and you won't want to stop listening anytime soon. You will power through from beginning to end

Conklin is a perfect choice for narrator. His voice is deep, crisp, and at times bellowing and he can play Heracles, Jason, and Sinbad in one scene and not even break a sweat. I really enjoyed listening to him, and could just feel the raw power in his voice as he drove a dagger home or thrust a sword through an opponent.

Oh, and it was great to see Martinez do the forward, he has written some of my favorite books, from Too Many Curses to a Nameless Witch. Give his stuff a try too!

I can see Candela, and hope that he does, continuing this series. I'd love a trilogy! This was such a fun romp across the seas, and I feel like a crewman on the Argonaut! Kevin, Can w set sail for adventure and the unknown again? I really can't wait to see what you come up with next! As a reader you should really check this book out. You will not regret it. The story is well written, well plotted, well placed, and has been sufficiently Harryhausened up. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.
