As the fallout from J.R. Simmons death begins to settle, some of the victims are still dealing with the results of that deadly night. Rose mourns the changes in her life and struggles to move on. Neely Kate is devastated when Joe leaves Henryetta two weeks after his father's death and refuses to speak to her. Joe is left dealing with his father's business and the consequent FBI investigation, while he wonders where he belongs.

But when Rose's former neighbor's family dog runs away, Neely Kate convinces Rose to look for the pet and both discover a few things about themselves in the process.

Good narrator

I was unable to listen to the earliest books in this series because of the poor quality narration. (Poor production quality and a narrator who over-reached her accent.) This narrator was excellent, and the production quality was fine too. Novella itself was a continuation of the series. For maximum entertainment, start with the first one, not here.

so glad it's not over

The narrator is fantastic! I love these characters so much. It was such a treat to listen to their shenanigans while driving around. It is a must read/listen to :)

Siblings are needed

It showed so much emotions of all the characters. It went deep and was very insightful of the effects on everyone’s from the fall out of Joe’s father.

Good series epilogue

This novella is a series epilogue. It gives us a glimpse of the aftermath of JR’s death, all the things that happened in the county to Rose and the secondary characters in the last year. We get some chapters from Joe and Neely Kate’s POV rather than just from Rose’s POV with snippets of how everyone is adjusting. Despite being short, the novella was well written, the characters had dimension and the storyline was engaging. This novella is not a standalone, it needs to be read after the other books in the series in order to understand the characters and plot lines and to not spoil any surprises. I am looking forward to reading Rose’s new series to see what happens next for her and for all the others.

Shannon McManus did a good job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters fairly convincingly.

You can’t skip this!

Other reviewers mentioned this was not worth the purchase and not important. I totally and whole heartedly disagree! You can’t miss this if you’re like me and read things in exact order. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear different vantage points.

What was the point of this book?

I usually love Denise Grover Swank. But this book seemed like a bunch of deleted scenes from the last full-length novel. The book keeps jumping narrators and it’s annoying and confusing. Don’t let this book dissuade you from the rest of the series, however. It’s quite good.
