About this listen

The grass is always greener on your sister's side of the fence....

Divorce left Harper Szymanski with a name no one can spell, a house she can't afford, and a teenage daughter who's pulling away. With her fledgling virtual-assistant business, she's scrambling to maintain her overbearing mother's ridiculous Susie Homemaker standards and still pay the bills, thanks to clients like Lucas, the annoying playboy cop who claims he hangs around for Harper's fresh-baked cookies.

Spending half her life in school hasn't prepared Dr. Stacey Bloom for her most daunting challenge - motherhood. She didn't inherit the nurturing gene like Harper and is in deep denial that a baby is coming. Worse, her mother will be horrified to learn that Stacey's husband plans to be a stay-at-home dad...assuming Stacey can first find the courage to tell Mom she's already six months pregnant.

Separately they may be a mess, but together Harper and Stacey can survive anything - their indomitable mother, overwhelming maternity stores, and ex's weddings. Sisters Like Us is a delightful look at sisters, mothers, and daughters in today's fast-paced world, told with Susan Mallery's trademark warmth and humor.

A Great Read

This is book number three, but would make a good stand alone book. You will be captivated by this series. Susan has a way to take things and twist them so your interest flows and the book never dulls. The storyline is well developed with believable with likeable characters with many different topics in this book. As usual she has written in humor, romance and lots of love. I recommend this book for a nice afternoon read. have in this book the focus on two sisters who are so different. Harper is like Martha Stewart, a homebody, and a mother. Then you have Stella who is so smart, a research scientist. This is book number four and it is such a great book. The storyline is well described with believable and likable characters. It can be a stand alone book but I recommend you read them in order books 1-4. You won't be sorry. Susan Mallory does a great job with the carryover. You will enjoy the dynamics of this story. I recommend this book.

I didn’t want it to end

It’s been a long while since I’ve read/heard a book with characters I care about. Tanya Eby, whose voice I happen to really like, always makes the characters real to me, each with distinct personalities. Sure, sometimes the male voices are similar, but their patterns of speech are individualized so I always know who they are. I really liked Lucas in this story, as much for the sound as for the content; sometimes I’d forget he isn’t a living, breathing human being who lives in my apartment complex. And Dean is such a great friend and colleague to Harper. He has a depth of caring that is palpable, despite his being a secondary, or even tertiary character.

It’s also been a long while since I’ve encountered an author who doesn’t exaggerate whatever discord each character is dealing with. Susan Mallory came close, but just when I’d start to think “get beyond this already,” she’d add more depth to the angst, or perspective. The women aren’t whiny, simpy, “I need a man to make me whole” characters, either, unlike so many in my recent readings.

My only complaint is that the ending came on rather suddenly. While not exactly as I’d expected it would conclude, it was more believable, except in its abruptness.

I wish the story hadn’t ended, even though it was finished. I just enjoy the characters too much to let go.

Life Story

This book has it all: a) a mother whose ideals have aged and set expectations no normal person can meet, b) teen age sex and the consequences, c) adult sex without relationship building, d) work realities and e) a new baby. Wow-at some point I was wondering how much more can these characters deal with. It has some ability growing at the end. Thank heavens.

Loved the varied storylines

My only complaint? Not spending more time with this family. Love Lucas- his flaws and all. Love the journey that Harper goes on. Love the daughter and Ashton. Love the whole relationship with Stacey her husband and Ashton.

Good book once again!

Although the story was predictable, it was a relaxing enjoyable book. And left room for another story.
