About this listen

Smoky knows only one way of life: freedom. Living on the open range, he is free to go where he wants to and do what he wants to. And he knows what he has to do to survive.

Smoky can beat any enemy, whether it be a rattlesnake or a hungry wolf. He is as much a part of the Wild West as it is of him, and Smoky can’t imagine anything else.

Then he comes across a new enemy, one that walks on two legs and makes funny sounds. Smoky can’t beat this enemy the way he has all the others. But does he really want to? Or could giving up some of his freedom mean getting something in return that’s even more valuable?

This is the classic great horse story written by a cowboy who trained a little black colt to become his most dependable horse. Here are the experiences of a fascinating horse from his birth in the wild, through his capture by humans and his work in the rodeo and on the range, to his eventual old age.

This was one of my favorite books when I was a kid, and it’s still a great book!

Great story, great performance. The only downside of the audiobook is we miss all of Will James’ illustrations.

Great return to a classic.

I borrowed this book on cd from my library years ago and it was an old scratched copy but still enjoyable but since that time, my kids have wanted to relisten to this book and I have been waiting and hoping it would become available- and finally it has! my teen daughter listened to it right away and says that the reader is great, pronounces things properly as far as she knows (parts of the book takes place in AZ, and we live in AZ and know those pronunciations) she feels he has the perfect sound for this book. an all around enjoyable listen. i would describe this book as similar to Black Beauty but a cowboy version...

great listen

The narrator was excellent. He was never flat and the different voices were very entertaining. But the story gets all the credit. Will James was great writer and a real cowboy.

The way that life took Smoky on a long outside circle.
