About this listen

—A Newbery Medal Winner

Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with four small children, is faced with a terrible problem. She must move her family to their summer quarters immediately, or face almost certain death. But her youngest son, Timothy, lies ill with pneumonia and must not be moved.

Fortunately, she encounters the rats of NIMH, an extraordinary breed of highly intelligent creatures, who come up with a brilliant solution to her dilemma. And Mrs. Frisby in turn renders them a great service.

RAT RACE

WE ALL HELP EACH OTHER AGAINST THE CAT
This is very entertaining and is so well written that I truly felt like I spent time with Mrs. Frisby in the field. It is descriptive enough that you can easily picture where everything is happening without being overly descriptive.

WE NEED A PLAN
The book is kind of two halves. The first half is more about Mrs. Frisby and what she goes through to save one of her sick children. Every parent can empathize with her as she faces several dangers. The second half is more about the rats. There is a fairly long tale (tail) about their time spend in a research lab. I thought that part could have been shortened up. Other than that, the rats are pretty cool. They also may encourage some children to do research and spend time reading and studying. They accomplish this without preaching.

IT IS EASY TO UNLOCK A DOOR WHEN YOU HAVE THE KEY
What kept this from getting the fifth star from me was the serendipity. Twice Mrs. Frisby just happens to hear the humans talking about drastic things they were going to do and when they were going to do them. These were life and death situations and she just happen to be there at the right time. In both cases she is also given a time table and plenty of warning, helping her and the rats to make plans.

The narrator was good, not great. She did not detract from the story, nor did she add to it.

A wonderful book

I think this is the best book I had ever read!
This book was not just an ordinary book of mice and rats, but had a great story of NIMH.
Also, the narrator spoke well, although sometimes there were small noises.

Mrs. Crosby and the Rats

This 58 year old child enjoyed the story and narrator very much. Past years I have had both mice and rats as pets and they were wonderful pets. I love the idea of a world of smart rats and mice that talk, read, and outsmart humans. The fanciful side of me can almost believe it. Recommend this audio book to all ages.

A childhood favorite revisited.

This was one of my very favorite books when I was young, 40 years ago. How delightful to listen with my 8 y/o son now. An enchanting story.

A classic!

I love this book. It goes into so much more depth and realistic detail than the Don Bluth animated film, The Secret of Nimh. It actually kind of bothers me that the movie introduced magic into the story for no reason I can fathom. Especially when it seems like O'Brien took great care in showing us that every amazing feat performed by these rats was accomplished through technology. Indeed, a famous quote by Arthur C. Clark always springs to mind whenever I think of this book, as it seems to be an underlying theme... "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Surely this is how the insular and mysterious rats were viewed by the other native animals in the vacinity.

In any case, I highly recommend this story. I have reread it many times.

Awesome

This book has told an excellent story and has a very stupendous lesson for all kids. Personally I loved the part when Mrs. Frisby heard the story of the rats.
