About this listen

We all saw it at once. Half a dozen voices screamed, 'Grenade!' simultaneously. Then everything went into slow motion. The grenade took an age to travel through its 20 metre arc. A dark, small oval-shaped package of misery the size of a peach....

April 2004: Dan Mills and his platoon of snipers flew into Southern Iraq, part of an infantry battalion sent to win hearts and minds. They were soon fighting for their lives.

Back home we were told they were peacekeeping. But there was no peace to keep. Because within days of arriving in theatre, Mills and his men were caught up in the longest, most sustained firefight British troops had faced for over 50 years.

This awe-inspiring account tells of total war in throat-burning winds and 50-degree heat, blasted by mortars and surrounded by heavily armed militias. For six months they fought alone: isolated, besieged and under constant enemy fire. Their heroic stand was a modern-day Rorke's Drift.

Sniper Platoon Under Siege in Iraq

Fast paced, and plenty of action. I expected more sniping content, given the title. Not for virgin ears, as the profanity is part of the performance, and is done as only the Brits can do it. I enjoyed the Epilogue, where the author gives an update on the members of the platoon.

Amazing story that keeps building

Extremely well written and narrated. As a true story i did not know where this was going and i kept expecting that the action would drop off. Little did i realize how far the action would continue to build. It was upsetting to think that these guys did not have 50 caliber rifles and extensive drone support, but the descriptions of the air support they did occasionally enjoyed was thoroughly exciting. This is a must read/listen book

Meh

I wasn’t captivated. And frankly it’s not a good start when it insults 1/2 the population - women - 4 minutes into the prologue. Very old fashioned. But I persisted. Stuck with it to the end because I am an avid reader of true sniper books and stories. There are SO many impressive ones out there. I’ve read about 15 -20 nonfiction sniper books and this was the slowest paced I’ve read. I resisted putting it down many times. I can’t recommend it for anyone who wants a compelling, dramatic read. It’s meh. If you want an amazing read look to Carlos Hathcock. Soooooo impressive and riveting.
