About this listen

Sober Stick Figure is a memoir from stand-up comedian Amber Tozer, chronicling her life as an alcoholic - starting with her first drink at the age of seven - and her eventual recovery. Amber writes about the crazy and harsh truths of being raised by alcoholics, becoming one herself, stagnating in denial for years, and finally getting sober.

As a teenager Amber is an overachieving student athlete who copes with her family's alcoholic tragedies by focusing on her achievements. It quickly takes a funny and dark turn when she starts to experiment with booze and ignores the warning signs of alcoholism. Through blackouts, cringe-worthy embarrassments, and pounding hangovers, she convinces herself that she "just likes to party". She leaves her hometown of Pueblo, Colorado, to follow her dreams and ends up in New York City, spending lots of time binge drinking, passing out on trains, and telling jokes onstage. She then moves to Los Angeles, thinking sunshine and show business will save her.

Eventually hitting rock bottom, she has a moment of clarity and knows she has to stop drinking. It's now been seven years since that last drink, and she's ready to tell her story. Sober Stick Figure is adventurous, hilarious, sad, sweet, tragic - and ultimately inspiring.

A must read for anyone struggling with addiction.

What did you love best about Sober Stick Figure?

I love the brutal honesty portrayed by the writing. You can really trust the author and how she tells her tale.

What did you like best about this story?

I like how the author is a normal person like you and me. Her story is one that so many people can relate to because she grew up in a small town. The same small town I did... Wait... She is my cousin! hahahahahaha I was gonna keep this troll going as long as I can but decided since my favorite thing about the book is the honesty, I should do the same.

Have you listened to any of Amber Tozer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have seen her perform standup many times and this performance is different. Yes it is a story like the comedy she slays on the daily. This is much different though, because it is the story of her life and what she has been through.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I can't pick one moment, but I would have to say the moments that she reveals personal epiphanies are the most impactful for me.

Great Story But I Didn't Like the Narration

If you could sum up Sober Stick Figure in three words, what would they be?

Funny. Brave. Inspirational.

What other book might you compare Sober Stick Figure to and why?

I'd compare it to The Bedwetter by Sarah Silverman. I'd say it had a lot to do with being funny, but very little to do with getting sober. That being said I loved Tozer's story and it is inspirational. I just don't think she included enough information for those struggling with addiction to learn something.

Would you be willing to try another one of Amber Tozer’s performances?

No. I'd read another one of her books, but she wasn't the best narrator. The only reason why I'm giving her a pass is that it's a memoir and written by herself.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Laugh. Cry. Get Sober. I did it, and So Can You.--Obviously would be Amber Tozer's Voice.

Any additional comments?

Even though the narration was poor and it wasn't too much about getting sober, I'd say it was a very impressive memoir. You can tell Tozer was really inspired and that she was able to convey a very dark part of her life in funny circumstances.

Brutally honest and brilliantly written

Never have I heard a more honest account of a troubling story with a happy ending. The narration kept me at full attention. Congratulations to Amber for the transformation you've achieved and continue to strive for.

Hilarious, heartbreaking, raw, redemptive

Gets alcoholism's insanity down perfectly. Tells the solution for alcoholics in a non preachy perfect portion. Recommend highly. Funny woman. Great storyteller.

Loved it!

Write another please! It’s refreshing to read about a rough, realistic story that was easy to relate to and read as though we were in her mind. I loved it when she voiced the other characters also.

Very honest and moving!

Amber Tozer is brutally honest in her memoir about her life with depression and alcohol addiction. I appreciate the courage and strength it must have taken to tell her story. I believe her book will provide much hope to the millions of people still suffering in the world today. It was relatable and very moving! Thank you for sharing, Amber!

Relatable but kind of meh

I enjoyed this book as a woman in recovery. Amber Tozer is honest in her telling that she didn't have to do a complete down and out. She writes about 9/11 and the effects that had on her. How her alcoholic father played a role in her addiction. It was relatable on a lot of levels. There were times when she was reading and I was like "I know that feeling" she praises sobriety and all the amazing things it has done for her. I love that. A good read for someone trying to get sober or understand alcoholism.
