About this listen

A modern master of suspense, critically acclaimed author Charlie Donlea returns with a taut, gripping novel about the deadly secrets hiding in plain sight....

The truth is easy to miss, even when it's right in front of us. As a forensic reconstructionist, Rory Moore sheds light on cold-case homicides by piecing together crime-scene details others fail to see. Cleaning out her late father's law office a week after his burial, she receives a call that plunges her into a decades-old case come to life once more.

In the summer of 1979, five Chicago women went missing. The predator, nicknamed the Thief, left no bodies and no clues behind - until police received a package from a mysterious woman named Angela Mitchell, whose unorthodox investigation skills appear to have led to his identity. But before they could question her, Angela disappeared.

Forty years later, the Thief is about to be paroled for Angela's murder - the only crime the DA could pin on him. But the cryptic file Rory finds in her father's law office suggests there is more to the case, and Angela Mitchell, than what was fed to the public, the details of which have been buried for four decades.

Rory's talents are tested as she begins reconstructing Angela's last days. Making one startling discovery after another, Rory becomes helplessly entangled in the enigma of Angela Mitchell and what happened to her. Drawing connections between the past and present, Rory uncovers dark truths about the reclusive victim, her father, and the man called the Thief that send her down a twisting trail where things may not be as they appear.

As she continues to dig, even Rory can't be prepared for the full, terrifying truth that is emerging....

Nothing will get in her way
"Rory Moore, compelled by her sense of justice, is swept into a grizzly, cold case murder file left behind by her late father. There are no leads and little evidence, though police at the time believed the crime was committed by a predator knick-named “the Thief.” *DUN, DUN, DUN* Narrated by Nina Alvamar, Some Choose Darkness is an unparalleled audio-adventure that takes listeners down the rabbit hole of a terrible case about five women who went missing during the summer of 1979 in Chicago. As I listened and followed along, hidden truths were uncovered and I could feel myself developing a sense of dread. Like Rory, listeners are immersed in the life and last days of one of the victims, only to come up with more questions than answers. Some Choose Darkness is un-put-downable until the very end."—Nicole R., Audible Editor

Can’t wait to find out if the author has another “thriller” book to listen to!

Loved this book!

Too much explaining and over abundant adjectives made worse by over acting although the story was interesting if predictable.

overwrought

Loved this book. Summit Lake, her first book, was good, but she has improved so much. I had to slog through Summit Lake. But this one is a great read.

So much better than her first book

Good character development, I would not call it suspenseful or surprising but really nice character evolution and story

Great story

Although the events that make it a ‘mystery’ become obvious with about 4 hours left, it is still just as good. Great author and love this narrator. Just bought number 2 of this series. Hope Charlie keeps going- Rory is a great character.

Excellent story and narration

This was the first novel by this author for me and I cannot wait to go to the next one in the series. This story has so many different twists and the main character is very different from any other heroin I’ve ever followed! The story is definitely sad in so many respects, but I was so engrossed in the story and unable to stop listening! Cannot recommend enough!

Fascinating and Goosebump Inducing!

as a screenwriter, I know the internal challenges that come with writing a story that can... 1. successfully carry your plots and twists from start to finish. 2. continue to build the unique arcs of your characters without losing one or two or more somewhere in the middle of act two. 3. keep your readers actively engaged.

in 'Some Choose Darkness,' author Charlie Donlea accomplishes the 3 points I mentioned above.

Charlie Donlea skillfully transitioning between two separate points in time to round out the story, provide the reader with the necessary depth to stay engaged, and, keep the birth of the mystery growing to fruition until the last line. well done.

though I was enraptured by 'Some Choose Darkness,' i was left with a pocket of unanswered questions, but am of the mind that a good story should always linger in the mind of the reader. my unanswered questions are not big and perhaps they will be a few threads Charlie Donlea will collect when making a second novel of this series?

a well done story for the crime, mystery, thriller genre!

a must read!

...deeply satisfying - from beginning to end.
