About this listen

In July 1970, actress Elaina Styles was slain in her rented Seattle mansion along with her husband and their son's nanny. When the baby's remains were found buried in a shallow grave close to a hippie commune, police moved in - only to find all its members already dead in a grisly mass suicide. Now, decades later, a film about the murders is shooting at the mansion. On-set caterer Laurie Trotter ignores gossip that the production is cursed. But then people start dying.... As Laurie digs deeper into what happened all those years ago, she discovers that the truth is more twisted than any whispered rumor, as a legacy of brutal vengeance reaches its terrifying climax.

Hard to follow

I have really been liking other books by this author, but for some reason I had a hard time keeping the story and characters straight in this particular book. It seemed a little bit convoluted. I still enjoyed it but was not able to get into the story as much.

Not a favorite by this author

I have loved Kevin O'Brien books, but this one is a bit hard to follow at times with too many different, but converging storylines and is really long winded because of that I guess. It's still interesting and was worth finishing.

This is O'Brien's best yet!

What about Jonathan Yen’s performance did you like?

Jonathan Yen gave an excellent performance. His tones, inflections, cadence and gravity hit the mark every step of the way.

Any additional comments?

This was Kevin O'Brien's best book to date. The book has two thriller plots going on simultaneously, each could have been a book in itself but together - WOW! When I first read the short description of this book I thought it sounded kind of contrived and wasn't sure this was going to work. Why in the world would a young woman working for a caterer play junior detective? This is a young single mother who moved to a new town, new job, people getting brutally murdered all around her - HELLO? Why would she stay? On top of that there is a looney who wants to pulverize her and take her young son in her home town looking for her. Next thing you know her face is on TV and still she stays. I kept thinking it can't work but to my surprise it did. Sorry I can't tell how or it would ruin the story so all I can say is GET THE BOOK! You won't regret it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I loved it, but it was too long winded

certain areas bored me because of overkill on efforts to get inside the characters heads.

Unnecessarily long

This book is about 8 hours too long due to all of the unnecessary details that add nothing to the story. Who cares what color pajama pants someone is wearing or what cereal they are eating. It was a lot of filler and became annoying. The narrator was good except his women voices, they all sounded like a man pretending to be a woman with high wispy voices.

This one was a good listen. It was hard for me to stop listening. I had to pay attention so I wouldn’t miss any clues.
