About this listen

In the country of Sohlgain, all young men are expected to chain a dragon and claim its charge. For Berun Toirnach, the eldest son of the nation's ruler, this means venturing onto a dragon reserve and hunting a wild dragon. A tradition his family has upheld for generations.

The aftermath of this hunt will shape Berun's life. He is given a position as a Thunder Priest and gifted the power to control lightning, Berun must decide what to do with this new power. Will he use it selfishly, or will he use it for the benefit of his country?

Years later, in an attempt to escape responsibility for a short time, Berun and his friends take a trip to the idyllic beachside city of Hurthow, where an ancient festival is celebrated by locals and foreigners alike.

But the safety and warmth of the sun and sand is an illusion. Dangerous enemies wait, hiding behind smiles and cold eyes.

Soon the lives of Berun's friends and family are put in danger, and the young prince must rely on his power and his allies, old and new, to save them. His father's most trusted bodyguard, a disgraced assassin known for his skill and ruthless precision. A young God Mage and her companions. And a coward with a power he's afraid to use. All of them will be needed to save those threatened.

But time is against them and their enemies have secrets of their own.

Element of Final Fantasy

I really enjoyed this book. It was a little hard to follow at first. I think mostly because the story jumps to perspectives of different characters, and the narrator doesn't pause between them. Once you've sorta adjusted to follow the narrator it's much easier.

I couldn't help but be reminded of Final Fantasy as I listened. If you're a fan of Final Fantasy, you will enjoy this book. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and I'm looking forward to seeing how the story develops.

Great book

Great book but the narrator needs to slow down his pace a little bit and maybe actually pause between switching to new characters

Interesting but frustrating

Any additional comments?

At times the book feels overly juvenile. Details such as naming their currency soul dollars and catch phrases like "Thunder" seemed to detract from this oddly satisfying yet frustrating story. Jakins has created a very interesting world that begs to be discovered, but lacks substance at times. The book is very entertaining.

Well worth the read!!

This was an incredible read/listen. I finished this book in 4 days. I can count on one hand how many books I’ve read this fast. The Author has a lot of talent and now I got to listen to some of his other books... The story was super unique and flowed really well. Can’t wait to read the sequel!

Excellent book

I enjoyed the way the author describes magic it comes off almost primal witch really adds depth to the world. I also really appreciated all the details with different country's customs, traditions, religions, etc. for instance the language barrier with Dan made for some pretty entertaining banter. I'd also like to note the the narrator did an amazing job with each voice I was thourouly impressed.

Good story would love a book 2

I enjoyed this book the narrator was ok but the story was great…. Only problem is where it ends. It so open that anything could happen next and I would not mind the author continue this story

Well worth the listen

James Jakins has written a nice piece of work, sad I could not find a follow-up book. Berun will take you on an adventure in a well-crafted world with is amazing places and unique people. Sean Tibenan did a good job with the narration and brings each character to life. Chapter 1 can be a little confusing but if you can keep track the story is amazing.

Feels like a B-rated movie script

Ya know those really great books that get chopped into terrible movies? It feels like that. Overly rushed and cut short in places. The narrator doesn't take pauses in between character changes making it hard to follow if your not paying 100% attention. The narrators voice changes sound like the overly embellished accents you would find in a high school drama club.
